About The Position

Corning is seeking a Mechanical Designer to join their dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for creating and refining mechanical equipment designs and layouts using advanced CAD tools, ensuring strict adherence to Corning Machine Drafting Standards. Your work will directly contribute to optimizing production systems, resolving design challenges, and delivering innovative solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, exceptional problem-solving skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree (AAS) in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in mechanical design, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and translate engineering solutions into equipment design requirements.
  • Demonstrated commitment to job‑site safety.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, including machining and fabrication, to ensure efficient and practical designs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver mechanical equipment designs and layouts using AutoCAD® and Inventor, ensuring compliance with Corning drafting standards.
  • Produce and maintain detailed drawing packages, build packages, machine part lists, illustrations, and equipment specifications for production systems.
  • Redesign mechanical components to reduce installation costs, resolve equipment interferences, and correct design deficiencies.
  • Execute design changes to address equipment or process challenges, ensuring all designs meet functional and performance requirements.
  • Provide detailed sketches and marked-up drawings to address evolving project needs.
