Mechanical Design Engineer

Matic•Menlo Park, CA
•$120,000 - $200,000•Onsite

About The Position

This role is for a Mechanical Design Engineer who will own parts and sub-assemblies from concept through high volume production. The robots are currently shipping to customers, meaning designed parts are tooled, built at volume, and used daily. The engineer will gain hands-on experience with real hardware and develop judgment through observing their designs in production. The role involves immediate work with hardware and a fast-paced startup environment where prototyping and iteration are key.

Requirements

  • Parts personally designed that are in production today, with the ability to explain every feature and why it's there
  • Fluency in at least one high volume process (injection molding, die casting, stamping, or metal injection molding) at a deep level
  • Experience running tolerance stack-ups on assemblies owned, including datum scheme selection and resolution of closing issues
  • Experience applying GD&T on drawings
  • Solidworks proficiency
  • Working experience with PDM/PLM, ECOs, and quality systems
  • Experience using FEA to make decisions, with an understanding of model limitations
  • A debugging instinct to reason from field failures back to design decisions
  • Comfort in a fast-paced startup environment
  • A technical degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • Around 2+ years of professional design experience (or demonstrated equivalent skills)

Nice To Haves

  • Genuine motivation to help those around you
  • Passion for learning outside normal comfort zones
  • Love diagnosing complex technical issues
  • Pride in details nobody else would notice

Responsibilities

  • Design parts and sub-assemblies within a defined architecture, and carry them through to mass production
  • Build own prototypes, break them, and iterate fast
  • Run component level testing for performance, durability, and part to part variability
  • Write and execute accelerated test plans that predict field behavior
  • Release production-ready 2D drawings that a supplier can quote and build without a follow-up call
  • Work directly with vendors and CMs on DFM feedback, tooling reviews, and first article inspection
  • Collaborate with EE, firmware, software, and industrial design to keep parts balanced against the rest of the system

Benefits

  • Medical coverage
  • Dental coverage
  • Vision coverage
  • Access to a 401(k) plan
  • Equity through the company's discretionary equity program
