Mechanical Design Engineer

Valeo•Seymour, IN

About The Position

Valeo is a global technology company and automotive supplier developing mobility solutions focused on intuitive driving, safety, and reducing CO₂ emissions. The Mechanical Design Engineer executes mechanical engineering work within defined projects, applies design standards and digital tools, and contributes to problem-solving and continuous improvement. The role collaborates with engineering teams, stakeholders, tooling engineers, and suppliers, and may provide technical support to junior engineers. The position covers mechanical architecture and design, packaging and thermal clearances, CAD modeling and production drawings, tolerance analysis, tooling feasibility, supplier design-for-manufacturing changes, and component and assembly lifecycle management in PLM. It also includes validation of release readiness and engineering changes, root-cause investigations, and ownership of structural and thermal simulations and design sign-offs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering field.
  • At least 2 years of Design Engineering experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Catia experience; experience with other design software will also be considered.
  • Automotive lighting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate awareness of project budgets and optimize resource utilization within the designated scope of work.
  • Execute technical solutions for engineering tasks within defined projects.
  • Participate in problem-solving initiatives, using Valeo methods such as QRQC to analyze issues and contribute to solutions.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including reports, specifications, and presentations.
  • Develop technical skills and knowledge within the discipline and stay abreast of industry trends and advancements.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to Discipline Junior Engineers, supporting onboarding and skill development.
  • Apply existing design standards in alignment with Valeo guidelines and best practices.
  • Use digital tools and processes outlined in the discipline's Digitalization Roadmap.
  • Identify opportunities for optimization and suggest improvements to processes and solutions.
  • Contribute innovative ideas and help identify potentially patentable inventions.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues, stakeholders, engineers, and team members.
  • Build packaging envelopes and section cuts under R&D direction.
  • Define mechanical architecture and mechanical designs for simulations, including thermal clearances.
  • Format 2D drawing callouts using standard GD&T blocks and FTA; calculate nominal dimensions and allowable tolerance stack-up limits.
  • Apply plastic molding and Valeo design rules, including draft angles, wall thickness, and parting lines.
  • Negotiate tooling feasibility with tooling engineers and suppliers and promote standardization.
  • Manage parting line shifts and approve or reject supplier DFM modifications.
  • Create and modify 3D parametric models, conduct packaging studies, and produce 2D production drawings.
  • Approve CAD maturity state in PLM and sign off on manufacturing release.
  • Manage PLM lifecycle for components and assemblies and maintain BOM accuracy.
  • Validate release readiness, baseline milestones, and customer engineering change requests (ECRs).
  • Rework geometry based on clear redlines.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and decide on fixes.
  • Run clearance and interference checks and standard section cuts.
  • Own structural and thermal simulations (FEA), worst-case tolerance stacks, and design sign-offs.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits program as part of a total compensation package.
  • Career growth opportunities.
