About The Position

The Mechanical Design Engineer – Switchgear is responsible for the mechanical design, layout, and documentation of UL 891 low-voltage switchgear assemblies. This role owns enclosure layouts, structural components, bus compartment arrangements, breaker mounting, cable management, ventilation, and serviceability considerations, ensuring designs are compliant, manufacturable, and aligned with customer requirements. This is a highly technical, execution-focused role requiring direct experience with UL 891 switchgear design, strong CAD skills, and close collaboration with electrical engineering, manufacturing, and production teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3–8+ years of experience designing low-voltage switchgear
  • Hands-on experience with UL 891 switchgear design
  • Ability to independently execute designs from day one
  • Strong knowledge of: Switchgear enclosures and structural design, Breaker mounting and compartmentalization, Bus compartment segregation and clearances, Cable entry, routing, and termination access, Cooling, ventilation, and arc containment
  • Experience supporting UL inspections and compliance documentation
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar CAD tools
  • Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication, weldments, and manufacturing processes
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with engineering and production teams
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and documentation skills

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical layouts and assemblies for UL 891 low-voltage switchgear
  • Create enclosure arrangements, internal compartments, breaker mounting schemes, and structural components
  • Develop fabrication-ready drawings, including: General arrangements, Sheet metal parts, Weldments, Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Ensure designs meet UL 891 requirements, manufacturing standards, and internal design rules
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering to align mechanical layouts with one-line diagrams, bus configurations, and cable routing/termination
  • Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) initiatives
  • Participate in design reviews to resolve interferences, access, clearance, and serviceability challenges
  • Support manufacturing during build, testing, and UL inspection activities
  • Contribute to value engineering efforts to optimize cost, size, and efficiency
  • Maintain accuracy, urgency, and ownership in a fast-paced production environment
  • Travel occasionally for factory coordination, supplier engagement, or project needs
