About The Position

The Mechanical Design and Test Engineer will support the space program located in Houston, Texas (77058). This role involves supporting Johnson Space Center's activities on the International Space Station and space exploration. The engineer will work in a team environment to analyze customer requirements and develop design solutions. Key activities include designing, developing, testing, implementing, and analyzing technical products and systems, as well as designing unique test fixtures and methods for various test programs. The position also requires developing system documentation such as procedures and hazard analyses, maintaining high technical excellence for all tasks, performing engineering design evaluations, and conducting extensive testing on space hardware. Preparation and presentation of designs at design reviews using MS Word and PowerPoint, producing engineering drawings, and performing dimensional fit analysis (including thermal effects), functional analyses, and structural analyses are also core responsibilities. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
  • Experience in the space industry or Department of Defense/Department of War.
  • Bachelor's degree in the field of engineering.
  • 2+ years of recent and related work experience.
  • Related hands on design experience.
  • Experience using solid modeling CAD software (Creo preferred).
  • Working knowledge of machine shop processes and familiarization with the structural and thermal analysis process in development of hardware.
  • Ability to support shift work during extended test operations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and TEAMS.
  • Team player with strong work ethics and culture oriented.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in written form, with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to follow company programs, processes, procedures, practices, requirements, goals, and objectives.
  • Organized with good time management skills.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Support Johnson Space Center's activities on the International Space Station and space exploration.
  • Analyze requirements from the customer and develop design solutions.
  • Design, develop, test, handle implementation, and analysis of technical products and systems.
  • Design unique tests fixtures and methods for various test programs.
  • Develop required system documentation such as procedures and hazard analyses.
  • Maintain the high level of technical excellence for all tasks to ensure the highest quality of technical products including test setups, test operations, development setups, development operations, documentation generation, execution and close out.
  • Perform engineering design evaluations.
  • Perform extensive testing on space hardware.
  • Prepare and present designs at various design reviews using MS Word and PowerPoint.
  • Produce engineering drawings conforming to applicable standards.
  • Perform dimensional fit analysis including thermal effects.
  • Perform functional analyses, when applicable, and sizing structural analyses.
  • Produce other required design documentation.
