About The Position

The Automation Conveyor Mechanical Engineering Group Manager leads a team responsible for the design, build, installation and launch of state-of-the-art conveyance systems in GM’s North America Vehicle Assembly Plants. You will oversee the suppliers and contractors who install and productionize Body Shop and General Assembly equipment and tooling, ensuring safe, timely, and cost-effective execution. You will be part of a broader team of manufacturing engineers and technical specialists who define how our vehicles are built. In this role, you will have full people-leadership responsibility for your GM team, including goal setting, coaching and mentoring, performance management, career development, and driving an inclusive, safe, and engaging workplace. You will also lead all hiring initiatives for your team. This role requires a high level of technical depth, creativity, and independent judgment. You will drive standardized work, process improvements, and system reliability to increase the productivity of the team members who operate and maintain the equipment you procure and install. Your organization will also develop and execute long-term sustainment plans for the equipment in the plants you support. This position requires significant business travel to remote plants. Because key activities occur during plant downtimes, you must be willing and able to work during holidays, weekends, and plant shutdown periods as needed.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in Manufacturing / Manufacturing Engineering, including:
  • Launch execution
  • Engineering design and build
  • Project management
  • Strong conveyor mechanical engineering background.
  • Extensive knowledge of automation conveyor system integration and validation procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of vehicle manufacturing processes and operations, and a solid understanding of Manufacturing Engineering roles and responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineers and collaborate cross-functionally with BIW and General Assembly managers and other key stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead NA regional automation launches
  • Staff, lead, and develop the automation launch team.
  • Oversee planning, integration, validation, and productionizing activities for conveyance systems in Body and General Assembly.
  • Own NA Automation Execution budget
  • Prepare, monitor, and adjust overtime and travel budgets.
  • Ensure execution within scope, cost, and timing targets.
  • Develop talent and bench strength
  • Support the HRM process and build succession/bench strength.
  • Lead the annual CAP process (including CPDT) for all direct reports.
  • Ensure all direct reports are trained and fully competent in required technical areas.
  • Partner on process and standards development
  • Interface with BIW and GA process development groups as they create and refine the BOE for specific program/plant launches.
  • Provide input based on conveyor mechanical and automation expertise.
  • Optimize controls and automation resources
  • Provide efficient, coordinated management of controls engineering resources across Body Shop and General Assembly.
  • Drive standardized work, continuous improvement, and best-practice sharing across plants.
  • Ensure long-term system sustainment
  • Lead the development of long-term sustainment plans for equipment performance, reliability, and maintainability in the plants you support.
