About The Position

The Mechanical Analysis Engineer supports the product design and development of precision optical assemblies subjected to environments associated with ground, flight, and space vehicles. The role uses finite element analysis (FEA) and other analytical methods to evaluate structural integrity and performance against requirements, inform design decisions, and support verification.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Five + years of applied mechanical analysis experience using FEA and other analytical methods to support product development decisions
  • Experience supporting hardware development and verification testing (including test execution support and requirements-driven reporting)
  • Proficiency with at least one mainstream structural FEA tool
  • Organized, meticulous attention to detail, self-starter, and motivated
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong written and oral technical communication
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office tools (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with optical or opto-mechanical systems (e.g., stability-sensitive structures, tight alignment/tolerance requirements)
  • Proficiency with Nastran or Ansys software
  • Experience correlating structural models to test data
  • Ability to work with export-controlled information (e.g., CUI/ITAR) in accordance with applicable requirements

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical analysis supporting optical assemblies for survival environments, including random vibration, mechanical shock, temperature extremes, and thermal shock
  • Evaluate failure modes, including bolted joint slip, ductile material yielding, brittle material fracture, fatigue damage, and bonded joint integrity
  • Evaluate operational performance, including elastic and thermo-elastic deformation, heat transfer impacts, and dynamic response
  • Define assumptions, margins, and recommendations that are traceable to requirements and suitable for design decisions
  • Support verification testing and development experiments
  • Participate in internal and customer technical reviews, presenting methods, assumptions, results, and conclusions clearly
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical design engineers, optical engineers, and customers during development
