About The Position

The Port of Vancouver USA is a multi-purpose port authority located in Vancouver, Washington along the banks of the Columbia River. The port has handled a variety of bulk and break bulk cargos since 1912. The Port of Vancouver USA is a hub for more than 7 million tons of cargo moving from as far away as the Midwest to the Middle East, making its way on barges, trains, ships, or trucks – all converging on port docks. The bulk of cargo at the port includes wheat, minerals, autos, large project cargo, and liquids. We are a versatile, hard-working port on a mission to create jobs and trade for the region. This is an exciting, highly visible time, requiring outreach and dialog with our community and stakeholders. The port is also home to over 50 industrial tenants that vary from manufacturing to electronics recycling and craft-beer malt distributing. We have added more than 50 acres of ready-to-build industrial property and are set to grow. We seek a professional, knowledgeable, Mechanic for a regular full-time position.

Requirements

  • Associate degree (2 years of college) or high school diploma with ASE certifications or equivalent combination of education, skills and experience to competently perform the job.
  • Proficiency in the use of shop tools required.
  • Strong diagnosis skills for electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card) upon hire.
  • Analytical skills: Able to gather relevant data from appropriate sources; identify all relevant factors or restrictions; apply logical reasoning to determine relationship of variables; develop results-oriented conclusions; test assumptions, observe results, and incorporate revisions or corrections.
  • Communication Skills: Intermediate level written and verbal communications skills. Must be able to communicate effectively up, down, and across the entire organization clearly and succinctly in a variety of styles to get messages across that have the desired effect.
  • Organizational skills: Able to prioritize and organize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints. Must have the capacity to balance both short- and long-term issues effectively and handle many simultaneous and often conflicting and changing priorities.
  • Problem solving skills: Logically think through and solve problems involving several variables. Remain objective in gathering information and investigating issues.
  • Computer Skills: Intermediate personal computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Office suite.

  • Ability to lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. and drive on an as-needed basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to use hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams preferred.
  • Experience with the use of Lathe, drill press, saws and other metal fabrication equipment preferred.
  • Experience with all Federal Emission Tiers standards highly preferred.
  • Current CDL license with air brake certification preferred; willingness to acquire CDL Class A if you do not have one.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintenance of all equipment, or vehicles used in the construction, maintenance and repair of port buildings, roads, docks, rail lines, electrical and water systems.
  • Uphold the port’s safety commitment in all actions and as a foremost way of thinking.
  • Maintain and operate EJ Ward Fuel System.
  • Maintain work area appearance and safety.
  • Identify and determine parts required for repairs.
  • Maintain accurate records of all service, repair, and other work through CMMS.
  • Use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, CMMS and other computer applications (Strong computer skills required).
  • Planning and project management for large equipment overhauls.
  • Work independently at remote sites from a fully equipped service vehicle.
  • Operate lift trucks as needed.
  • Exhibit positive and effective interaction with other port associates, vendors, and customers.
  • Actively support the Port’s mission and vision and demonstrates values consistently.
  • Work effectively as a team player with all Port employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.
