About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Public Works Operations Manager, and assigned under direct supervision of the Feet Manager and Shop Foreman, services and repairs city vehicles and other city-owned equipment. This role has multiple levels (I, II, III) with increasing responsibilities and qualifications. The Mechanic I performs general maintenance and repairs. The Mechanic II is proficient in diagnosing and repairing a wider range of equipment, and trains lower-level mechanics. The Mechanic III supervises fleet operations in the absence of management, maintains records, and performs complex diagnostics and repairs independently.

Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• General mechanic experience in both gasoline and diesel engine maintenance and repair including experience with heavy-duty equipment and trucks (Mechanic I).
• Capable of completing minor field repairs (Mechanic I).
• Maintain vehicle comeback rate of 5% or less.
• Maintain turnaround time of 7 days per work order.
• Must hold the following certifications or obtain within 1 year of hire: State Inspection, A/C, ASE T8 Preventative Maintenance (Mechanic I).
• After initial probationary period, must obtain valid Utah Class “B” Commercial Driver License.
• Proficient with diagnosing and repairing a wide range of equipment (Mechanic II).
• Capable of completing all field repairs (Mechanic II).
• Must hold the following certifications or obtain within 1 year of hire: ASE T4 Brakes, ASE T5 Suspension (Mechanic II).
• Strong leadership skills and capable of mentoring level I and II mechanics (Mechanic III).
• Proficient with independently diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining all equipment (Mechanic III).
• Capable of completing all field repairs without guidance (Mechanic III).
• Must hold the following certifications or obtain within 1 year of hire: ASE T6 Electrical, ASE T7 HVAC, EVT E4 Body Chassis Ambulance, EVT F1 Inspection Maintenance and Testing (Mechanic III).
• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of basic personal computers.
• Knowledge of budgeting processes and purchasing materials and equipment.
• Skilled with light and heavy equipment and automotive apparatus.
• Ability to communicate with immediate supervisors and other city employees.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including email correspondence, keeping logs, writing reports and making presentations at City meetings.

Responsibilities

• Reads and interprets hydraulic and electrical schematics and repairs both systems.
• Makes repairs and adjustments on hydraulic and air braking systems, steering and suspension systems, lighting system, starting and charging system, heating and air conditioning systems, fuel system, computerized electronic engine systems, and snowplow equipment.
• Repairs and overhauls all types and sizes of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, and drive train components, gang mowers, and specialized turf equipment.
• Responds to emergency road calls and performs field repairs.
• Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and general tune-ups.
• Maintains records and work logs including materials used and time spent.
• Orders parts and supplies.
• Performs oxyacetylene and electronic welding, and fabrication and layout for special equipment; cuts and fits material for welding.
• Installs, removes and repairs light bars and other accessories.
• Reviews, diagnoses, repairs and overhauls all types and sizes of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, and drive train components (Mechanic II & III).
• Diagnoses problems and makes repairs and adjustments on hydraulic and air braking systems, steering and suspension systems, lighting system, starting and charging system, heating and air conditioning systems, fuel system, computerized electronic engine systems, and snow plow equipment (Mechanic II & III).
• Trains lower level mechanics in more complex maintenance and repair activities and use of tools and shop equipment (Mechanic II).
• Supervises fleet operations when the Fleet Manager and Shop Foreman are absent (Mechanic III).
• Maintains vehicle maintenance records and assists with scheduling for mechanics (Mechanic III).
• Performs other duties as assigned.
