About The Position

Performs intermediate skilled trades work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive, construction, and specialized light-to-heavy equipment. Work performed involves diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of vehicles and equipment, including those used in public transportation, emergency services, and construction. Mechanics may work on light and heavy-duty vehicles, buses, trucks, police equipment, and specialized equipment like sewer and water vehicles. Work is performed under minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Valid Virginia (VA) Driver's License - Must have upon hire. If relocating to VA, a valid VA drivers’ license is required to be obtained within 1 year from date of hire.
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire (for Level I).
  • OSHA 10 - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within 3 months from date of hire (for Level I).
  • EPA Section 609 Certification - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within 3 months from date of hire (for Level I).
  • Class A CDL - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire (for Level II).
  • OSHA 40 - Must have certificate of completion or must complete training within 1 year from date of hire (for Level II).
  • VDOT Intermediate Work Zone - Must have certificate of completion or must complete training within 6 months from date of hire (for Level II).
  • Virginia State Police Motor Vehicle Class A Inspectors License - Must have certificate of completion or must complete training within 6 months from date of hire (for Level II).
  • EPA UST Operator License Class B - Must have certificate of completion or must complete training within 6 months from date of hire (for Level II).
  • Leadership Training - Must have Leadership /Team Building Training certificate from VRSA or other reputable vendor as approved by Human Capital. Must have or maintain and obtain within 6 months from the date began serving as a team lead (for Level III Team Lead).
  • Proficient in automotive, heavy truck, & equipment repair and maintenance techniques.
  • Ability to operate a computer, and other facility equipment needed to perform job duties, proficiency in various software, including Microsoft Office suite; and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and work with little direct supervision.
  • Work requires the ability to sit, stand, walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work requires the ability to complete repetitive wrist, hand, and/or fine motor movement.
  • Work requires the ability to grasp, pull, push, and reach.
  • Work requires the ability to climb and balance.
  • Work requires the ability to talk, hear, listen, and comprehend.
  • Work requires the ability to drive and/or operate mechanical equipment.
  • Work requires visual acuity of 20 feet or more, visual acuity of 20 inches or less, three dimensional vision, precise hand/eye coordination, the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Exert up to 20 pounds of force constantly, 50 pounds of force frequently, to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Work requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.

Nice To Haves

  • May serve as a Team Lead at the discretion of the Chief Mechanic; must have minimum of two (2) years of prior supervisory experience to be considered for Team Lead.
  • VDOT Flagger Certification - Must obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire
  • Basic Work Zone Certification - Must obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire. May also have VDOT certifications that are equivalent to Basic Work Zone.
  • CJIS/VCIN Access, as applicable - If assisting with Town facility maintenance, must obtain and maintain VCIN contractor level clearance. Will also be subject to fingerprinting and additional background check.
  • Industry Certifications in Fleet Management from a Nationally Recognized Institution or Association (NAFA, ASE, APWA) - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within the timeframe required by supervisor (for Level III).

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections on fleet vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair standard mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Assist with minor bodywork and tire changes.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance, parts usage, time, and materials.
  • Ensure clean vehicles and equipment; maintain shop cleanliness.
  • Assist as needed to accomplish a variety of Fleet tasks.
  • Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, brake, fuel, and electrical issues in a wide variety of auto, heavy trucks, and equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair various types of specialty equipment including but not limited to police vehicles, snowplows and spreaders, hydraulic systems, etc.
  • Inspect, repair, replace, mount/balance light and heavy-duty tires.
  • Perform specialized maintenance tasks, such as engine overhauls and transmission repairs.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of Mechanic I.
  • Diagnoses and repairs of major component systems such as engine (gas/diesel), transmission (automatic/manual), differentials, brakes (automotive/heavy duty to include air, abs, and hydraulic), and sub-systems relating to drivability, electrical system, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, and comfort control systems.
  • Assist with fleet vehicle & equipment purchasing and disposal.
  • Assist with parts purchasing.
  • May serve as the Team Lead and assist the Chief Mechanic with administrative duties as assigned.
