About The Position

This position is responsible for maintenance, repair, modification and accessory outfitting on all company vehicles and equipment. The Mechanic ensures that equipment is ready and available for use by inspecting, making repairs and testing vehicles. This role also involves completing vehicle inspections and preventive maintenance, coordinating maintenance work with approved vendors, managing parts inventory, and coordinating road service and vehicle recovery. The Mechanic verifies serviceability through test drives, adjusts controls and systems, and complies with state vehicle requirements. They maintain vehicle and equipment appearance, records, and shop tools, while controlling maintenance and repair costs. Additionally, the position requires recognizing training needs, maintaining parts and supplies inventory, staying aware of industry changes, operating PEC vehicles responsibly, and maintaining driver eligibility. The role also involves maintaining the security of confidential information, staying abreast of technological advances, demonstrating regular attendance, and performing other related duties as assigned. Supervisory responsibilities include providing direction to fleet-related contractors and Porters.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Four years of directly related work experience
  • Knowledge of using computer systems, which may include setting up and using hardware and software programs, entering data or processing information.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service
  • Knowledge of factory-based diagnostics systems training, procedures, and operation
  • Skilled in time management
  • Skilled in managing changing priorities
  • Skilled in operating power tools
  • Skilled in gas and diesel engine troubleshoot and repair, electrical installation, computer diagnosis and accessory installation on all classes of trucks and vehicles
  • Skilled in chassis components, i.e., troubleshooting and repairs (brakes, suspension, driveline, etc.) on all classes of trucks and vehicles
  • Skilled in oral and written communication
  • Ability to comprehend and understand verbal and written information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to interact with tact and courtesy and maintain a professional demeanor
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, analyze and resolve conflict and problems.
  • Ability to collaborate with other technicians/mechanics to discuss repair plans and share expertise on complex diagnostic issues.
  • Furnish basic hand tools such as sockets, wrenches, and rachets up to 1” and a toolbox within six months of employment
  • Obtain a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within first year of employment and Motor Vehicle Report that comply with PEC policy

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree or certification in Automotive Technology may substitute for two years of directly related work experience
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that equipment is ready and available for use by inspecting, making repairs and testing vehicles
  • Complete vehicle inspections and preventive maintenance, i.e., engine tune ups, oil changes, tire rotation, wheel balancing and filter replacement
  • Coordinate and schedule vehicle maintenance work to the approved vendors
  • Manage parts inventory
  • Coordinate road service and vehicle recovery with approved vendors and contractors
  • Verify serviceability by conducting test drives, adjusting controls and systems
  • Comply with state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards
  • Maintain vehicle and equipment appearance in accordance with department standards
  • Maintain vehicle records by recording service and repairs
  • Maintain shop tools and equipment, troubleshoot breakdowns, maintain supplies, and perform preventive maintenance
  • Control maintenance and repair costs by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options
  • Recognize training needs and communicate them to the supervisor
  • Maintain parts and supplies inventory by placing orders and verifying receipt of materials
  • Maintain awareness of changes that affect the automotive technician industry
  • Operate PEC vehicle(s) for business purposes in accordance with applicable Federal, State, and local law and PEC policies and procedures
  • Maintain driver eligibility through appropriate valid Texas Driver's License and driving record in accordance with PEC policy
  • Maintain the security of confidential information
  • Stay abreast of advances in technology
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned
  • Provide direction to fleet related contractors
  • Provide direction and mentorship to Porters
