About The Position

As a Mechanic/Welder 1st class, you would work alongside senior mechanics in the department assisting with dismantling and examining broken down machinery, diagnosing problems, and repair cane harvest equipment and any other equipment in the Agriculture Department. The scope of the job duties encompasses all facets of welding repair. Will safely, maintain, troubleshoot, efficiently repair, and service all types of sugar cane harvesting and related equipment in an expediate manner while being part of a team and able to be flexible and flow with a constant changing work environment.

Requirements

  • Must be proficient in all aspects of SMAW(stick), GMAW(MIG), and GTAW(TIG) welding, oxyacetylene welding and cutting, and air carbon arc cutting.
  • Must be able to repair, fabricate, hardface, and assemble complete structures or components of equipment, utilizing layouts and/or blueprints following industry accepted standards.
  • Ability to accurately use metal forming, cutting, grinding, and shaping tools such as presses, punches, brakes, pipe benders, threaders, optical tracing tables, grinders, and drills, in order to bend, shape, and cut parts to be welded, bolted, screwed, or riveted together.
  • Must have high mechanical aptitude and experience in repairing harvesting equipment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to comprehend and convey mechanical information.
  • Must be able to read manuals, blueprints, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Must have own set of tools.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • High school diploma (or GED)
  • mechanically inclined
  • at least three (3) to five (5) years of mechanical experience mobile equipment, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of agricultural equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair all tractors, sugar cane harvest equipment and any other equipment in the Agriculture Department’s field and shop operations.
  • Safely and correctly repair harvest equipment including but not limited to cane elevators, cane harvesters, tractors, air compressors, and any equipment utilized in support of agriculture.
  • Dismantle defective machines for repair, using hand tools.
  • Record details on work orders of repairs, and parts used.
  • Reassemble machines and equipment following repair, testing operation, and making adjustments, as necessary.
  • Test and replace electrical components and wiring, using test meters, soldering equipment, and hand tools.
  • Visually identify leaking/loose/worn/broken/dirty components on agricultural operations and industrial equipment including but not limited to tractors, air compressors, and other support equipment.
  • Responsible for inspecting, diagnosis of equipment failure, timed repairs, oversee the operation of numerous lifting devices to include proper rigging procedures.
  • Completion of project work, performs related work such as flame cutting, bending, forming, beveling, notching of metal, performs all work within Standard Repair Times (SRTs), works from prints, drawings, and verbal instructions, performs standard layouts and set-ups of dimensions and tolerances, utilizes standard shop hand tools, measuring devices, and equipment, performs other maintenance-related work as required.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate / OSHA Standards and performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
