About The Position

SMS group is a leading partner in the metals industry, with a global presence and over 150 years of experience in metallurgy, industrial processes, and digitalization. The Valparaiso, IN workshop specializes in refurbishing and repairing unique blast furnace equipment. We are seeking an experienced skilled mechanic to join our team, learn our specialized equipment, and grow with us. The pay is negotiable and based on experience and qualifications. Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of experience with refurbishment / reconditioning on parts in a job shop or similar environment
Knowledge of and prior experience in disassembly and assembly of mechanical parts is required
Knowledge of and prior experience in the use of hand and power tools is required
Ability to read prints and drawings is required
Knowledge of and prior experience in overhead crane and lift trucks, including hoisting and rigging techniques is required
Ability to follow step-by-step procedures with accuracy is required
Candidate must have good interpersonal and communication skills

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of machining and fabrication methods preferred
Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic & piping systems preferred
Knowledge of electrical systems (wiring motors and small panels) preferred
Vocational or High School; Specialized Technical Training and/or on the job experience (preferred)

Responsibilities

Perform mechanical duties on equipment as instructed
Disassemble, repair/recondition with precision, assemble and test equipment
Perform fabrication of lightweight apparatus and/or structures used in the maintenance of equipment
Interface with project management, engineers, technical personnel and other staff as needed to complete projects
Perform housekeeping and maintenance activities as required
Provide any additional support where needed
