About The Position

This is skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, construction, fire and rescue vehicles and maintenance equipment. Performs skilled work in repairs to automobiles, draglines, trucks, tractors, graders, bulldozers, front-end loaders, fire and rescue vehicles and a wide variety of other construction and maintenance equipment. Work includes both gasoline and diesel fueled apparatus. Employees work under the supervision of the Mechanic Shop Foreman. Employees use independent judgment concerning the methods of repair after receiving oral or written work orders from the Mechanic Shop Foreman.

Requirements

  • High School graduation, and two (2) year journeyman level experience in the field of automotive mechanics, or graduation from an approved course in the trade, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license required.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade
  • Knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of construction equipment and similar machinery
  • Knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel fueled internal combustion engines
  • Ability to diagnose troubles in automotive and other public works equipment
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to follow automotive diagrams
  • Skill in the use of tools, machines and testing instruments of the trade

Nice To Haves

  • CDL Class B driver’s license preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and overhauls on trucks, automobiles, fire and rescue vehicles, both light and heavy construction equipment
  • Rebuilds motors, tunes motors, knows how to use testing equipment, and knows transmissions and brake work
  • Evaluates the overall condition of all types of construction equipment, locates faults or defects and makes necessary repairs
  • Repairs of hydraulic systems on construction equipment
  • Prepares records and reports on work accomplished
  • Performs preventive maintenance such as lubrications, oil changes and service checks
  • Installs and assists with installing special automotive equipment
  • Performs general shop maintenance and clean up
  • Required to work during a local declared state of emergency
