About The Position

This position is classified and subject to the provisions of the Merit System Rules pursuant to Arizona Law. The role involves repairing, maintaining, and rebuilding automotive and heavy equipment. The specific level (I, II, or III) depends on the applicant's qualifications and experience, with varying degrees of supervision and complexity of tasks. All positions require a post-offer, pre-employment background screening, and this safety-sensitive position is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Mechanic I: One (1) year of recent work experience in the maintenance and repair of passenger cars, vans, commercial vehicles (up to 1-ton capacity) and heavy equipment.
Mechanic II: Three (3) years of recent work experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of passenger cars, vans, or commercial vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
Mechanic III: Five (5) years of recent work experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of passenger cars, vans, or commercial vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
Ability to be covered by county insurance.
Ability to prepare records and reports.
Ability to lift a minimum of 60 pounds.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
Ability to follow written and verbal instruction.
Ability to read, write and speak English.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Mechanic II & III: Working knowledge of use of computers, scanners and computer operations.
Mechanic II & III: Working knowledge of maintenance welding and fabrication welding techniques.
Mechanic III: Working knowledge of planning and scheduling work.

Valid Class ‘A’ Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Valid U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Medical Examiners Certificate.
ASE Technician Certifications.

Responsibilities

Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains a wide variety of vehicles and heavy equipment in the field or in the shop.
Performs various preventative maintenance functions.
Orders parts and supplies required for assigned tasks.
Maintains an orderly work area.
Performs skilled work of routine difficulty in repairing, maintaining and rebuilding automotive and heavy equipment (Mechanic II).
Performs skilled work of moderate difficulty in repairing, maintaining and rebuilding automotive and heavy equipment (Mechanic III).
