Reporting to the Manager, Fleet this position repairs, maintains fixed and towed ground support equipment, including snow removal and mechanized sweeping equipment and all other GTAA vehicles.

Requirements

  • Valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification in the trade of Truck and Coach Technician (310T).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic and direct experience in vehicular and equipment maintenance gained in a variety of jobs.
  • Valid Ontario Provincial Class D driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a D class AVOP.
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Transport Security Clearance.
  • Knowledge of automotive and allied engineering technology associated with the design, inspection, testing, operation, maintenance, and repair of light vehicles and heavy equipment to meet the requirements of the Airports Authority Group.
  • Ability to maintain up-to-date knowledge of current Ministry of Transportation regulations and practices.
  • Ability to maintain up-to-date knowledge of current technology used across a highly diversified fleet of light and heavy, technologically advanced equipment.
  • Requirement to stay current with advancing technology related to electronically controlled equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer diagnostics and programming tools used to perform troubleshooting and maintenance duties due to the increasing use of computer‑controlled equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper response procedures for hazardous spills and containment.
  • Knowledge of accurate record‑keeping practices.
  • Knowledge of proper tool maintenance during work activities.
  • Knowledge of established health and safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the airport layout and operational environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Emergency vehicle technician (EVT) trained or certified would be an asset.
  • Experience working on Fire and Emergency equipment would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain engines, component parts, and attachments for mobile, fixed, and towed ground support equipment, including snow removal and sweeping equipment, CFR equipment, motor vehicles, tractors, compressors, and diesel-, gasoline-, and gas turbine‑powered standby power units, including components with computerized fuel injection systems.
  • Perform engine tune-ups and diagnose problems using electronic instrumentation systems.
  • Inspect, adjust, repair, and/or replace major and minor vehicle and equipment components, including transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, steering, suspension, and electrical systems.
  • Diagnose and rectify failures of major or minor components or complete systems, including disassembling and rebuilding units using new, repaired, or fabricated parts as required.
  • Overhaul engines, transmissions, and related components, and modify older equipment to accept new components where originals are no longer available, extending equipment life.
  • Inspect, repair, and replace braking systems, including drums, linings, disc pads, cylinders, power assists, brake lines, bearings, seals, and electronic anti‑lock brake components.
  • Inspect, repair, and adjust electrical systems including starters, alternators, lighting, wipers, electronic ignitions, governors, and controls.
  • Perform maintenance and repair work on emergency power units in cooperation with Airfield Electricians.
  • Diagnose and repair air conditioning systems, including evacuation and recharging, and prepare propane‑powered vehicles by replacing filters and testing lines for leaks or damage.
  • Repair and service hydrostatic systems and modify systems to reduce hydraulic failure risks on the airfield.
  • Repair and modify emergency crash vehicles with computerized transmissions, turrets, foam regulators, tire inflation/deflation systems, electronic fuel systems, sensors, and planetary gear reduction systems.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and general servicing on airport vehicles, ground support equipment, emergency power units, and groundside transit‑style buses, including oil changes, filters, lubrication, safety inspections, tires, batteries, lights, glass, cleaning, and degreasing.
  • Inspect, repair, and certify dump trucks, trailers, and similar equipment in compliance with Ministry of Transportation safety standards for highway operation.
  • Maintain an inventory of assigned hand tools, request replacements as required, and use manufacturer manuals and specifications to ensure repairs meet established standards.
  • Perform electric and gas welding and cutting and accurately record job details on work orders, including hours, mileage, work performed, and materials used.
