About The Position

Troubleshoots, repairs, and conducts preventative maintenance on Port Houston equipment and supporting equipment. This role involves inspecting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical equipment or machinery including container handling units, yard tractors, forklifts, vehicles, and terminal chassis. The position requires diagnosing and repairing component parts of machinery such as gearboxes, hydraulic systems, brakes, and compressors, as well as chassis components and systems. Utilizing computer or diagnostic tools for information retrieval and providing cost estimates for repairs are also key aspects of this role. The mechanic will use various hand tools and equipment proficiently and must be able to remove, repair, and replace major components of yard trucks and chassis. Reading factory manuals and blueprints, coordinating repair schedules, and delegating work duties to subordinate staff are also responsibilities. The role requires working scheduled and unscheduled overtime as needed and adhering to Port Houston's core values.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • 4+ years related mechanic experience required.
  • Knowledge of diagnostics and repair.
  • Knowledge of mechanics.
  • Knowledge of automotive and heavy-duty equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions concerning occupational hazards.
  • Ability to work with others.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate a forklift.
  • A current, valid Texas driver's license is required.
  • A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, repair, and maintain mechanical equipment or machinery including but not limited to container handling units, yard tractors, forklifts, vehicles and terminal chassis.
  • Diagnose and repair component parts of machinery including gearboxes, hydraulic systems, brakes, compressors and other related parts; diagnose and repair chassis components and systems, brakes, pneumatic, suspension, and alignment.
  • Utilize computer or diagnostic tools to enter and retrieve information.
  • Provide cost estimates for repairs to equipment and machinery including engine overhaul, body repair and work order requests.
  • Use hand tools, hoists, pressure gauges, drills, grinding wheels, and other tools proficiently to carry out assigned tasks.
  • For yard truck and chassis repair, remove, repair and replace transmissions, engines, brakes, suspensions, exhaust, fuel, cooling and electrical systems.
  • Read and use factory manuals and blueprints as required to fulfill job assignments.
  • Coordinate repairs and maintenance schedules and delegate work duties to subordinate staff.
  • Work required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be fulfilled during regular working hours.
  • Work a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by supervisor.
