About The Position

Performs skilled mechanical work analyzing and diagnosing problems. Inspects, replaces, and/or repairs defective parts. Performs preventative maintenance on City of Orlando automobiles, tractors, mowers, trucks, street sweepers, equipment, fire trucks and equipment, police cars and/or motorcycles, and small engines. Assigns and oversees work and training of lower-level mechanics. Performs a variety of tasks requiring specialized knowledge and skills. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.

Requirements

  • Mechanic Automotive I: High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and one (1) year mechanical experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Mechanic Automotive II: High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and three (3) years of mechanical experience in repairing street sweepers; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Mechanic Automotive III: High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and four (4) years of mechanical experience in repairing street sweepers; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes required (for Mechanic I and III).
  • Valid Class B CDL required (for Mechanic II).
  • Must own a standard set of mechanic tools.
  • Must be able to read and interpret plans and technical bulletins (for Mechanic II and III).
  • Mechanic Automotive III: Must satisfactorily complete two (2) ASE Block Tests or meet all passing requirements for four (4) required academic titles from the mechanical listing within one (1) year of hire.
  • Mechanic Automotive III: Must complete 6,075 hours of on-the-job training, subject to verification by the "Review Board."

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory training desired (for Mechanic II and III).
