About The Position

To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets and related facilities. This is the full journey level class within the Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class perform a full range of duties as assigned under general supervision. This levels receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the II level, or when filled from outside, require directly related work experience.

Requirements

  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • Three years experience in construction or related field.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have ability to obtain Class A or B CDL within six (6) months of request when requested by supervisor.

  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the job.
  • Ability to perform work in an undesirable or hazardous environment including inclement weather, confined spaces, improper illumination and traffic.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to operate and use a variety of tools, machinery and equipment relevant to work assignments.
  • Ability to lay hot mix asphalt.

Responsibilities

  • Install street signs; dig hole for post; cement and hang sign; prepare work orders for street signs.
  • Paint old or rusted signs; identify locations where signs are missing and replace with new sign.
  • Ensure that safety apparel is worn at all times and that safety rules and regulations are observed in the performance of duties.
  • Measure, lay out and paint markings for intersections, crosswalks, parking lots and curbs.
  • Secure and partition off work areas with traffic signs, cones and barricades; direct traffic around work areas as necessary.
  • Install and repair traffic control devices, guardrails and barricades; maintain existing signs and traffic control devices; clean site as necessary.
  • Participate in street repairs; prepare holes in street surfaces for repair; apply patching material to fill hole.
  • Trim and remove foliage obstructing traffic signs or signals; clean road shoulders as necessary.
  • Clear storm drains of refuse and debris.
  • Participate in cleaning the job site.
  • Operate a variety of equipment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
