About The Position

The Transit Bus Mechanic Apprentice participates in a structured training program designed to develop the skills necessary to become a Journey-level Transit Bus Technician. Apprentices receive a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction while working under the supervision of certified technicians. The program prepares apprentices to inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair transit buses and related systems, including diesel, electric, hybrid, and alternative fuel propulsion systems, electrical systems, brake systems, HVAC systems, and vehicle body components. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program, employees may advance to Transit Bus Technician / Journey-Level Mechanic positions. The apprenticeship program includes is structured to include: 5,350 hours of On-the-Job Training (OJT) 650 hours of Related Instruction Total Program Hours: 6,000 Apprentices will be evaluated every six (6) months on their progression within the program.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) must be obtained during the program.
• Diesel mechanic certification or associate degree must be obtained during the program.
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications must be obtained during the program.
• Mechanical aptitude.
• Desire to learn basic computer and diagnostic tool use.
• Problem solving and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to read or desire to learn to read schematics and technical manuals.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Maintain reliable attendance.
• Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
• Ability to lift and move heavy mechanical components.
• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces.
• Ability to operate tools and mechanical equipment.
• Ability to work in maintenance shop environments around noise, fumes, and moving equipment.

Responsibilities

• Participate in a structured training program to develop skills for a Journey-level Transit Bus Technician.
• Receive on-the-job training and classroom instruction under the supervision of certified technicians.
• Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair transit buses and related systems (diesel, electric, hybrid, alternative fuel propulsion, electrical, brake, HVAC, vehicle body components).
• Complete 5,350 hours of On-the-Job Training (OJT).
• Complete 650 hours of Related Instruction.
• Be evaluated every six (6) months on program progression.
