This position involves fabricating, assembling, repairing, and maintaining mechanical apparatus, machines, facilities, and equipment, requiring advanced knowledge and skill in machinery and bench operations, working to close tolerances. The role operates under general supervision and does not have formal supervisory authority, though may coordinate activities of lower classified trades personnel. The Mechanic A will work with a variety of hand, bench, and machine shop tools, including precision gauges, gears, fixtures, and lathes. Typical duties include laying out, planning, and completing mechanical fabrication and assembly assignments with minimal supervision, setting up and operating machines, working from blueprints, sketches, diagrams, and verbal instructions, assembling complicated mechanical components, maintaining mechanical equipment, and performing incidental electrical maintenance on equipment like elevators, hoists, conveyors, and motors. The role may also involve performing basic carpentry or electrical tasks in emergencies or when incidental to mechanical work.
