About The Position

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) is seeking a full-time Meat Inspector in the Food Safety Division. This position (PIN #04000333) is in state government and will be required to work throughout Oklahoma with primary counties being Marshall and Murray. The State of Oklahoma offers a comprehensive Benefits Package, including a generous benefit allowance to offset the cost of insurance premiums for employees and their eligible dependents. The hourly pay for this position is up to $25.07 based on education and experience. Basic Purpose/Position Description: This position is responsible for performing inspections at meat and poultry plants in Oklahoma to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of procedures for inspecting, evaluating and grading various agricultural commodities
  • Knowledge of state and USDA regulations governing the standards and transport of applicable agricultural products
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws regarding packaging, labeling and other standards related to agricultural products
  • Knowledge of environmental and sanitation standards
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in the applicable agricultural industry
  • Knowledge of various types of animal and plant diseases
  • Knowledge of record keeping
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics including percentages
  • Knowledge of English usage
  • Ability to conduct inspections related to agricultural products, services, and facilities to determine compliance with established standards, laws and regulations
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to attend to several matters simultaneously
  • Ability to operate and maintain monitoring and detection equipment
  • Ability to apply research methodologies
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Quickly identify abnormalities in food animals prior to and after slaughter
  • Recognize and identify actual and potential food safety hazards in the meat-processing environment
  • Perform agriculture inspections at meat processing establishments
  • Complete and submit reports and documents
  • Collect, package and ship samples
