About The Position

The City of Keller Mayor’s Internship Program is an 8-week unpaid program that provides students the opportunity to learn more about their local government, public policy, community engagement, and local initiatives while developing valuable professional skills. The program dates are June 15, 2026 - August 18, 2026. Participants will review City Council meeting agenda packets, summarize items, and provide recommendations on how they would vote on each issue and why. They will also meet with Mayor Ross McMullin before each City Council meeting to discuss agenda items and share recommendations. Additionally, participants will attend one City Council meeting, meet with the Development Services Director for an orientation on Planning & Zoning-related items, and attend two department-specific learning opportunities based on their interests in public service. Upon completion of all requirements, participants will be recognized at the final City Council meeting of their eight-week program.

Requirements

  • Must be a City of Keller resident.
  • Must be enrolled in high school or higher education.
  • Must upload a letter of interest and resume with their application.
  • Must attend 3 of the 4 scheduled City Council meetings.
  • Must attend one City Council meeting during the 8-week period.
  • Must attend a virtual meeting with the Development Services Director the 1-2 weeks before the first City Council meeting of the program period.
  • Must attend two department-specific learning opportunities.

Nice To Haves

  • Limited to two (2) participants per cycle.
  • Two (2) finalists will be determined based on submitted letter of interest and resume.

Responsibilities

  • Review each regularly scheduled City Council meeting agenda packet during the 8-week period.
  • Summarize agenda items and provide recommendations for how they would vote on each issue and why.
  • Meet with Mayor Ross McMullin at 4:30 p.m. before each City Council meeting to discuss the agenda items and share recommendations.
  • Attend one regularly scheduled City Council meeting during the 8-week period and check in with City Secretary Kelly Ballard at the end of the meeting.
  • Meet with the Development Services Director for an orientation on Planning & Zoning-related items.
  • Attend two department-specific learning opportunities, based on personal interests in public service (e.g., Police, Fire-Rescue, Public Works, Economic Development, Parks & Recreation, Finance, Library Services, Senior Services, City Secretary’s Office, and Communications).
