About The Position

SDJA is seeking a full-time math teacher and math department chair for the 2026-2027 academic year. The role involves fostering strong math fluency, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving skills through engaging instruction, real-world applications, and differentiated learning strategies. The successful candidate will teach five high school classes and lead the math department, focusing on instructional coherence, professional dialogue, programmatic development, curriculum review, student course placement, faculty supervision, and budget management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in math or related subject area
  • Three years teaching high school math required
  • Highly proficient with technology tools such as Google Docs
  • Skilled at effective classroom management strategies
  • Upholds high ethical standards and models professionalism at all times.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Willing to undergo both Live Scan background check and TB screening as part of the hiring process.
  • Disclose all current and former employment with educational institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Convene and facilitate weekly departmental meetings to support instructional coherence, professional dialogue, and ongoing programmatic development.
  • Attend weekly or bi-weekly department chair meetings with the Head of Upper School and Assistant Head of Upper School.
  • Provide instructional supervision through regular classroom observations and formal evaluations of faculty within the department, offering constructive, evidence-based feedback to support pedagogical growth.
  • Lead the systematic review and development of curriculum in collaboration with departmental colleagues, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and established standards.
  • Support the student course registration and placement processes by advising on appropriate course selection and placement in consultation with faculty, academic leadership, and parents.
  • Advance departmental professional learning by coordinating and encouraging participation in a range of development opportunities, including internal workshops, peer observations, school visits, and external conferences.
  • Maintain department budget, including establishing financial needs of the department and approving all purchases from the department budget.
  • In partnership with divisional leadership, oversee and participate in faculty recruitment processes, including candidate evaluation and the facilitation of equitable and rigorous search procedures.
  • Advise the Assistant Head of Upper School and Head of Upper School on teaching assignments.
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that align with curricular standards and facilitate active learning; develop and maintain scope and sequence.
  • Create clear objectives and utilize relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction, adapting teaching strategies to meet the unique needs of each student.
  • Assign and evaluate classwork and exams, providing timely feedback to students and communicating progress to parents and colleagues.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and other required documentation using platforms such as Canvas.
  • Utilize effective classroom management techniques that foster respect, collaboration, and student engagement.
  • Create a conducive learning atmosphere that promotes academic achievement, personal responsibility, and individuality in all students, guiding their behavior towards success.
  • Guide student behavior to foster academic achievement, personal responsibility, intellect, and individuality in all students.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.
  • Participate in experiential education programs and take on certain divisional and school-wide commitments as assigned.
  • Attend Faculty Week (the week following graduation), orientation, Faculty In-Service meetings (the week before the new academic year begins), Back-to-School Night, Open House and admissions events, parent meetings, professional development, and chaperoning field trips.
