About The Position

The Pathways Program provides unique and specialized services for students in grades 9 and 10 who require a structured environment focused on strengthening academic skills and attendance. In addition to receiving aligned instruction, social/emotional support, and behavioral support, students in the Pathways Program work with community partners to build problem-solving skills, self-awareness, and aptitude in preparation for a post-secondary pathway—whether employment, education, or enlistment. The program is staffed with two licensed content teachers who provide blended instruction across core academic areas. Additional staff will provide counseling and/or IEP/504/EL services as needed. The Pathways Program is located in The Well on the third floor of the School Board Office Building. Instruction follows a predetermined A/B block schedule running July 2025 through June 2026.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mathematics, or a related science discipline (Biology, Earth Science, or Environmental Science)
  • Hold or be eligible to hold a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in the applicable content area
  • Strong foundation in mathematical and/or scientific principles and inquiry-based instruction aligned with Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOLs)
  • Experience teaching math and/or STEM, with the ability to deliver content through explicit instruction, blended learning, and real-world applications
  • Demonstrated ability to provide academic, behavioral, and social/emotional support to students who lack motivation or exhibit challenging behaviors
  • Strong classroom management skills suited for an alternative education setting
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of effective instructional strategies for diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 plans, and EL designations

Nice To Haves

  • Mathematics background and endorsement is strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with Virginia's 3E Readiness Framework

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with Virginia SOLs and division pacing guides that meet the diverse needs of students
  • Provide explicit mathematics instruction as the primary content focus, with blended instruction in additional subject areas as needed
  • Deliver content through differentiated instruction, hands-on experiences, and real-world applications appropriate for alternative education settings
  • Monitor and assess student progress through formative and summative assessments; analyze data to adjust instructional strategies
  • Implement behavior management strategies and interventions to support positive student behavior
  • Facilitate advisory check-ins, social skills training, goal setting, and conflict resolution as part of the program structure
  • Collaborate with the on-site administrator, high school counselors, high school administrators, and support staff to develop and implement behavior intervention/support plans and other educational plans
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, grades, and behavior
  • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians regarding student progress and any concerns
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that fosters student engagement and learning
  • Support students in developing the social and emotional skills necessary for success in and out of the classroom
  • Use technology tools and digital platforms to enhance instruction and facilitate student engagement
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in alternative education and behavior management
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
