About The Position

Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is seeking a Maternal Fetal Medicine Sonographer Specialty to provide specialized maternal-fetal ultrasound services. The position is full-time, day shift, Monday through Friday, and is eligible for a sign-on bonus and relocation assistance. The sonographer communicates with patients to obtain clinical maternal-fetal history or informed consent, explains procedures, answers questions, and assists physicians with CVS, amniocentesis, and image optimization studies. The role requires specialized knowledge of fetal anatomy, pathology, physiology, and maternal-fetal ultrasound principles. The sonographer positions patients for image quality while maintaining comfort and safety, applies critical thinking and additional imaging views or modalities as indicated, measures structures and pathology, evaluates color flow and Doppler waveforms, and records images, data, and technical notes for physician interpretation. The position also provides clinical services in accordance with specialized maternal-fetal ultrasound standards and serves as a resource to students, nurses, fellows, and other technologists. The sonographer participates in department and hospital improvement initiatives, in-services, and meetings; follows required cleaning and high-level disinfection procedures; maintains related logs and equipment; and keeps exam rooms and work areas neat and safe.

Requirements

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon start.
Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification in Obstetrics & Gynecology upon start.
Successful completion of the Inova Nuchal Translucency (NT) Program within 6 months if not already Nuchal Translucency certified.
Two years of hospital- or doctor's-office-based experience performing specialized maternal-fetal sonography to detect fetal anomalies.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Degree from an accredited sonography training program.

Responsibilities

Communicate with patients to obtain clinical maternal-fetal history or informed consent and explain procedures, answering questions to ease anxiety and support cooperation.
Assist physicians with CVS, amniocentesis, and image optimization studies using departmental protocols.
Apply maternal-fetal ultrasound principles and specialized knowledge of fetal anatomy, pathology, and physiology to examinations.
Position patients to optimize image quality while ensuring patient comfort and safety.
Use critical thinking to enhance examinations with additional modalities and views based on disease processes and fetal anomalies.
Select images for physician interpretation and accurately measure maternal-fetal structures and pathology.
Provide specialized maternal-fetal ultrasound services to detect fetal anomalies and act as a resource to students, nurses, fellows, and other technologists.
Obtain and evaluate color flow and Doppler waveforms and determine whether further evaluation is needed.
Record data, images, and technical notes to support the physician's preliminary interpretation.
Participate in department and hospital performance improvement initiatives, in-services, and meetings.
Clean ultrasound transducers, perform high-level disinfection according to hospital policy, maintain the disinfection device, and maintain associated logs.
Maintain equipment, exam rooms, and work areas in a neat and safe condition.
