About The Position

The Iowa Department of Transportation's District 2 Materials Office is looking to hire a Materials Fabrication Inspector 1 who will be responsible for monitoring Aggregate Production in an 8-county region of District 2, Northeastern Iowa. This position will be responsible for sampling inspection and testing of materials that are used in construction and maintenance projects. The shift is 7:45 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary, and the position is subject to be on call 24 hours a day during emergencies and/or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Equivalent of four years of full-time work experience in the sampling, testing and inspection of materials used in highway construction and maintenance projects.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the equivalent of one year (thirty semester hours) of post high school education in engineering technology, engineering, physics or the physical sciences for one year of the required full-time work experience to a maximum of two years.
  • OR substitution of one year of full-time journey level work experience in the design, production, construction, inspection and/or repair of weldments fabricated to a code, standard or specification for each year of the above-required full-time experience to a maximum substitution of two years.
  • OR employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of one year of full-time experience as a Materials Technician 3.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority.
  • If a CDL is not designated, all positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and participate in random drug and alcohol testing programs.
  • Must pass a post-offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments.
  • Must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours (for designated positions).

Nice To Haves

  • Technical certifications: Aggregate Technician, Level I PCC, Level 1 HMS, and Soils Technician, and other certifications as needed.
  • Attend training courses and conferences as required to gain additional knowledge and to obtain and maintain required Technician Certifications.
  • Certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Technical Training and Certification Program for Highway Materials and Construction; and/or other certifications as required.
  • Entry-level driver Training is available upon hire through the Iowa DOT.
  • A successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring Aggregate Production in an 8-county region of District 2, Northeastern Iowa.
  • Reviewing aggregate producer quality control programs that are maintained in accordance with the Construction and Materials Bureau.
  • Evaluating the quality control (QC) program and staff of approved aggregate producers.
  • Observing the production and testing procedures, reviewing documentation, records, and proficiency testing with the producer technicians.
  • Sampling various materials from active construction and maintenance projects- including: reinforcing steel, steel piling, reinforcing bar splicers, bolts, and other fasteners.
  • Witness calibration of production equipment.
  • Monitoring the manufactured products, including epoxy-coated reinforcing steel, ready mix concrete, corrugated metal pipe, and reinforced concrete pipe.
  • Performs duties related to highway maintenance and snow and ice removal as needed.
  • Interpreting plans, specifications, instructional memorandums, and contract documents.
