About The Position

The Materials Engineering Manager will lead the development, selection, testing, and performance evaluation of materials used in Weatherford’s oilfield equipment and technologies. This role is critical in ensuring material integrity, reliability, and compliance with industry standards in challenging environments, including high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT), corrosive, and subsea conditions. The successful candidate will manage a team of engineers and specialists while collaborating cross-functionally with R&D, manufacturing, quality, and field operations teams to drive innovation and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or related engineering discipline (master’s or PhD preferred).
  • 8–12+ years of experience in materials engineering within the oil and gas industry.
  • Demonstrated leadership or management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of: Metallurgy (carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, nickel alloys, CRA’s)
  • Strong knowledge of: Corrosion and environmental cracking mechanisms (CO₂, H₂S, H2, galvanic, pitting, SCC, and SSC)
  • Strong knowledge of: Material testing and failure analysis techniques
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving expertise.
  • Effective communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Project management and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to safety and quality.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with oilfield tools, drilling, completions, or production equipment.
  • Familiarity with HPHT and sour service environments.
  • Knowledge of industry standards (API, NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, ASTM).
  • Experience managing laboratories or testing facilities.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of materials engineers and laboratory personnel.
  • Set technical direction and priorities aligned with business objectives.
  • Foster a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee selection of metals, polymers, elastomers, and composites for oilfield applications.
  • Ensure materials meet performance requirements for extreme environments (corrosion, erosion, fatigue, sour service).
  • Approve material specifications and standards.
  • Lead investigations into material failures in the field and manufacturing.
  • Provide technical recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Interface with customers on technical issues when required.
  • Drive development of new materials and coatings to improve product performance.
  • Collaborate with global R&D teams on advanced technologies.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging materials.
  • Manage materials testing programs (mechanical, corrosion, metallurgical).
  • Ensure laboratory operations meet internal and external standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM, NACE).
  • Oversee qualification testing and certification processes.
  • Ensure adherence to industry standards such as API, ASTM, and NACE.
  • Support audits, certifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Represent Weatherford in industry organizations.
  • Work closely with design engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams.
  • Support product development from concept through commercialization.
  • Provide technical guidance on material-related risks and opportunities.
