About The Position

Alcoa is seeking a Materials Engineer to develop, evaluate, select, and implement refractory and ceramic materials for aluminum electrolysis cells and related high-temperature process equipment. The role leads research and development activities to improve refractory performance, cell reliability, thermal efficiency, service life, and resistance to chemical and mechanical degradation. It combines materials science fundamentals with hands-on work in laboratory, pilot-scale, and industrial settings. The engineer develops an understanding of refractory degradation mechanisms and applies that knowledge to practical material selections, specifications, test methods, and cell-design improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramics Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of work experience in materials or ceramics processing, characterization, production, or related areas.
  • Knowledge of materials selection for high-temperature corrosive environments.
  • Experience in characterization of ceramics and metals.
  • Ability to develop project plans and execute them in a disciplined manner to meet objectives within the timeline.
  • Ability to physically perform work in laboratory and industrial environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or higher in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramics Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate and lead R&D projects, define objectives and work plans, and conduct research that advances scientific knowledge and improves breakthrough materials in advanced smelting processes.
  • Apply detailed knowledge of materials chemistry, microstructures, and failure mechanisms to develop a fundamental understanding of materials performance.
  • Solve problems to root cause, identify improvement opportunities, and implement innovative solutions to improve materials development or production activities.
  • Apply materials fundamentals and technology to practical solutions and applications in laboratory, pilot, and commercial-scale environments.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation packages, including pay-for-performance variable pay.
  • Recognition and rewards programs.
  • Flexible spending accounts and a generous employer contribution to the HSA.
