Materials Engineer

Schaeffler•Wooster, OH

About The Position

Schaeffler is seeking a Materials Engineer to conduct magnetic material characterization and support the development of competitive products. The role involves understanding mechanical-system architecture and risk-analysis measures, breaking designs into subsystems and components, creating detailed product specifications, assessing component reuse, and developing and selecting suitable alternative structures. The engineer will maintain traceability with the mechanical architecture and manage work products under configuration management, including material designations, versions, and storage locations. The position also collaborates with engineering teams, contributes to continuous improvement, and promotes compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and company policies.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical, Chemical, or Material Science.
  • Three to five years of professional experience in materials engineering, with an emphasis on magnetic materials and their applications in mechanical systems.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience operating advanced equipment and interpreting results from SEM, TGA, DSC, FTIR, and ICP instruments.
  • A solid understanding of magnetic-material characterization techniques, including microstructural analysis, thermal behavior, and chemical composition assessment.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to draw conclusions from complex datasets and translate insights into engineering solutions.
  • Effective communication skills for multidisciplinary collaboration, clear technical documentation, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without employment visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • A master's degree or PhD is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct magnetic material characterization activities required to develop competitive products.
  • Understand mechanical-system structure from its architecture and consider risk-analysis measures in the construction.
  • Break structures into subsystems and components and create detailed product specifications.
  • Determine whether existing subsystems and components can be reused.
  • Develop alternative structures and select the most suitable option.
  • Ensure double-sided traceability with the mechanical architecture and provide work results under configuration management, including material designation, versioning, and storage location.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering teams.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Adhere to and promote compliance with relevant safety standards, environmental regulations, and company policies throughout the engineering process.
