About The Position

The Materials Engineer is responsible for executing material quality management programs and evaluating material and tooling performance through testing, trials, and data collection. This role involves writing specifications for new materials and tools, planning the implementation of new equipment, and ensuring material quality through on-site inspections and analysis of in-service failures. The position also evaluates new technologies and assists in their implementation, tracking, and reporting. Functional Expertise: Evaluates new materials to ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., ASTM and API) and Code requirements. Oversees statistical sampling of incoming materials to ensure quality and compliance with product requirements. Develops material specifications for products used in the system and manages material analysis programs. Administers the Defective Item Program, conducts root-cause analysis of failed materials, and reports findings. Business Acumen: Identifies and evaluates new technologies and materials to improve system integrity and operational efficiency. Prepares cost-benefit analyses for new technology impacts on field operations. Engagement: Coordinates field trials for new products or materials. Develops communication plans for new product introductions, changes, and failure analysis responses. Responds to internal requests for material-related support, interacts with supplier technical staff, and collaborates with third-party labs for specialized testing. Demonstrates safe and efficient work practices in an office environment. Driving Results: Makes recommendations for alternate vendors or products in conjunction with Supply Chain, based on failure analysis testing. Assists in establishing material recall plans and monitors utilization rates of new technologies to validate cost impact. Conducts on-site manufacturing inspections to ensure vendor compliance.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in a recognized engineering discipline.
  • 2 plus years of engineering or operations experience in a gas utility, pipeline transmission, or other energy-related field including gas industry equipment manufacturing (for Engineer II).
  • 5 plus years of engineering or operations experience in a gas utility, pipeline transmission, or other energy-related field including gas industry equipment manufacturing (for Engineer III).
  • Thorough understanding of ASTM standards, API standards, ANSI standards and other standards as referenced in 49CFR192.7.
