About The Position

The Materials Engineer is responsible for executing material quality management programs and evaluating material and tooling performance through testing, trials, and data collection. This role involves writing specifications for new materials and tools, planning the implementation of new equipment rollouts, and ensuring material quality assurance through on-site manufacturing inspections and oversight of incoming material sampling. The position also includes material analysis, reporting on in-service material failures, evaluating new technologies, and assisting in their implementation, tracking, and reporting. Key responsibilities fall into several categories: Functional Expertise: Evaluating new materials for system introduction, verifying characteristics, and ensuring compliance with industry standards (ASTM, API) and Code requirements. Overseeing statistical sampling of incoming materials to ensure quality against specified requirements. Developing material specifications for approved products. Managing material analysis programs (e.g., failure analysis, data collection). Administering the Defective Item Program and conducting root-cause analysis of failed materials. Business Acumen: Identifying and evaluating new technologies and materials to improve system integrity and efficiency. Preparing cost-benefit analyses for new technology impacts on field operations. Engagement: Coordinating field trials of new products/materials. Preparing communication plans for new product introductions, changes, and failure analysis responses. Responding to internal requests for material and system component support. Interacting with supplier technical staff and third-party labs for specialized testing. Demonstrating safe and efficient work practices in an office environment. Driving Results: Making recommendations for alternate vendors or products based on failure analysis findings, in conjunction with Supply Chain. Assisting in establishing material recall plans. Monitoring utilization rates of new technologies to validate cost impact. Conducting on-site manufacturing inspections to ensure vendor compliance.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in recognized engineering discipline
  • 2 plus years of engineering or operations experience in a gas utility, pipeline transmission, or other energy related field including gas industry equipment manufacturing (for Engineer II)
  • 5 plus years of engineering or operations experience in a gas utility, pipeline transmission, or other energy related field including gas industry equipment manufacturing (for Engineer III)
  • Thorough understanding of ASTM standards, API standards, ANSI standards and other standards as referenced in 49CFR192.7

  • Oversight and project management of required material analysis programs (e.g. Mechanical Fitting Failure Analysis/Forms/DOT reporting, Plastic Pipeline Data Collection samples/forms)
  • Administering the Defective Item Program and conducting root-cause analysis of materials deemed defective or to have failed and writing report of findings
  • Identifying and evaluating new technologies and materials to improve system integrity and achieve greater efficiency
  • Preparing cost-benefit analysis on the impact of new technology on field operations
  • Coordinating field trials of new products or materials
  • Preparing communication plan in regards to the introduction of new products, changes to existing products and material failure analysis response
  • Responding to internal requests for support as it relates to materials and system components
  • Interacting with supplier’s technical staff on product performance
  • Interacting with third party labs for specialized testing
  • Demonstrating safe and efficient work practices in an office environment
  • Making recommendations, in conjunction with Supply Chain, regarding alternate vendors or products based on findings from failure analysis testing
  • Assisting in establishing material recall plans as necessary
  • Monitoring utilization rates of new technologies to validate cost impact
  • Conducting on-site manufacturing inspections to ensure vendor compliance with specified requirements of the material being purchased
