About The Position

The highly motivated Materials Engineer will focus on supporting powertrain fluids and analytical chemistry testing at the PACCAR Technical Center in Mount Vernon, Washington. The candidate must be a detail-oriented, initiative driven individual who will thrive in a dynamic testing and evaluation environment. The candidate must be able to operate independently and collaborate effectively with others while accommodating shifting priorities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience
  • Familiarity with the chemical composition of fuels, oils, and coolants used in powertrain systems.
  • Familiarity with petroleum product industry standard test specifications
  • Experience with analytical testing techniques used to evaluate fuels, oils and coolants
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-directed, excellent analysis and technical judgement skills required
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technically oriented individuals
  • Ability to build constructive relationships with suppliers and industry partnerships
  • Strong PC skills – Microsoft applications
  • Basic statistics
  • Proactively addresses process issues and continuous improvement opportunities
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with chemical analysis techniques including Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), combustion infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), gas chromatography (GC), mass spectroscopy (MS), wet chemistry and governing industry standard test methods
  • Experience with extraction and analysis of pre-combusted petroleum deposits and post-combustions colloidal products
  • Experience evaluating typical suite of used fluids test results (i.e. oil/coolant) and interpret impact to overall lubrication or coolant system health
  • Ability to leverage knowledge of analytical fluids testing as a means of providing input to fluid related root cause analysis investigations
  • Familiarity with commercial vehicles use cases and heavy-duty fuel, coolant, and lubrication subsystems.
  • Ability to learn new techniques quickly
  • Experience with Design of Experiments
  • Strong technical writing skills

Responsibilities

  • Support powertrain fluid analysis and technical recommendations
  • Technical lead on analytical testing techniques for in-house laboratory and third-party testing of organic and inorganic materials.
  • Complete materials testing, document results, and summarize findings in formal reporting structure.
  • Root cause analysis
  • Support PACCAR standards development
  • Project management and test sampling plan development
  • Concisely convey testing conclusions to a wide range of organizational stakeholders
