About The Position

Lilly’s Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) organization develops synthetic drug substances and products from pre-clinical development through commercialization. The Advisor, Analytical Chemistry is an individual-contributor role on a collaborative team, primarily based in the laboratory. The position involves hands-on analytical work across oligonucleotide, peptide, and/or small-molecule programs, supporting the development and implementation of product control strategies and advancing medicines toward clinical milestones and regulatory submissions. The scientist uses analytical platforms and techniques—especially chromatography and mass spectrometry—to characterize materials and processes and support the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines. Work includes analytical method development, experimental execution and interpretation, stability studies, impurity characterization, starting-material testing, drug-product performance testing, and internal process development. The role also contributes technical input to external-network activities, reviews methods, supports technology transfer, and helps prepare technical reports and regulatory documents such as IND and NDA submissions. With experience, the scientist may provide informal mentorship and technical expertise to cross-functional teams while remaining focused on individual-contributor laboratory responsibilities. The position is laboratory-based with daily hands-on experimental work and possible exposure to chemicals, allergens, and loud noises. Occasional travel of 0–10% may be required. The position is located at Lilly Technology Center – North in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Requirements

  • PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a closely related STEM discipline; or a master’s degree in one of these fields with at least 8 years of pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical development experience; or a bachelor’s degree in one of these fields with at least 12 years of pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical development experience.
  • Strong hands-on laboratory skills and technical problem-solving abilities, including experience with multiple analytical techniques such as HPLC, mass spectrometry, or NMR.
  • Ability to perform hands-on analytical laboratory work in pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical development or a closely related analytical chemistry role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to convey technical results and data implications.
  • Ability to prioritize laboratory workload, navigate experimental challenges, and work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic laboratory environment.

Nice To Haves

  • For PhD candidates, more than 2 years of post-PhD hands-on laboratory experience in pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical development or closely related analytical chemistry roles.
  • A track record of hands-on contributions to pharmaceutical development projects, including regulatory submission support (IND/NDA), method development and validation, and analytical testing strategies.
  • Previous hands-on pharmaceutical industry experience or experience with analytical techniques directly applicable to pharmaceutical development, such as HPLC and mass spectrometry.
  • Deep fundamental understanding of and hands-on experience with reversed-phase, ion-exchange, size-exclusion, chiral, and/or gas chromatography.
  • Working knowledge and practical laboratory experience with optical spectroscopy (such as Raman or FTIR), NMR, structure elucidation, and powder characterization techniques (such as XRPD and particle size distribution).
  • Learning agility and passion for applying hands-on analytical chemistry to pharmaceutical development challenges and patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on laboratory work to design, develop, and implement product control strategies for oligonucleotide, peptide, and/or small-molecule programs.
  • Use multiple analytical technologies in daily laboratory work, with emphasis on chromatography and mass spectrometry; operate and troubleshoot instrumentation and apply emerging analytical techniques.
  • Develop analytical methods, generate data to justify specifications, conduct stability studies, test starting materials for synthetic processes, identify and characterize impurities, and test drug-product performance characteristics such as dissolution and disintegration.
  • Conduct laboratory research supporting internal process development, including experimental design, sample preparation and analysis, instrument operation and troubleshooting, and data interpretation.
  • Provide technical input for analytical activities performed within the external network and review methods for technical soundness, development, and fitness for purpose.
  • Support technology transfer to CRO/CMO organizations and Lilly manufacturing sites.
  • Identify and implement laboratory solutions to development challenges, monitor emerging analytical chemistry trends, and maintain familiarity with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate technical results and implications of laboratory data; collaborate with regulatory, clinical, and manufacturing partners; and contribute to technical reports and regulatory submission documents.
  • With experience, provide informal mentorship to junior scientists and technical expertise to cross-functional project teams while maintaining individual-contributor laboratory responsibilities.
