About The Position

Under direct supervision, the Material Handler handles and maintains the flow of materials and products on the premises according to established guidelines. The role is with San Lorenzo Lumber & Home Centers in Santa Cruz, California, which is owned by Builders FirstSource. This is an entry-level position with on-the-job training. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
• Knowledge of and ability to use motorized and non-motorized material handling equipment.
• Manual dexterity.
• Knowledge of safety procedures for materials handling tasks.
• Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
• May be required to perform tasks involving climbing, lifting, pushing, or kneeling.

Responsibilities

• Physically handle materials used to construct components and finished products to optimize their movement, including lifting, carrying, and stacking items as needed.
• Operate motorized and non-motorized material handling equipment; some equipment may require specialized training.
• Attend to training from a foreman or more senior handlers to increase knowledge of work processes.
• Understand and observe safety procedures and practices to prevent injury to self or coworkers.
• Attend periodic safety meetings as required and potentially recommend changes to improve safety procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
