Merchants Metals is seeking a Material Handler for the GAW Department. We are one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of fence systems in North America with a 60-year legacy. The Material Handler will be responsible for moving freight, stock, and other materials, sorting cargo, receiving and inspecting finished goods, recording inventory, and preparing product for shipping. This role requires adherence to safety procedures, providing excellent customer service, and the ability to work overtime as needed. Essential functions include wearing appropriate PPE, following safety procedures, reading work instructions, setting up machines, standing or walking for the entire shift, and using arms and back to perform tasks. Availability for overtime, including Saturdays, is required. Forklift experience is preferred. The schedule is Monday-Friday, 5:30 PM - 5:00 AM.

  • Must be able to understand written instructions and follow procedures.
  • Forklift experience preferred
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must be able to work overtime as required.
  • Must be able to work overtime as required with Saturday availability.

Responsibilities

  • Move freight, stock, or other materials to and from storage or production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, ships, or containers, by hand or using trucks, tractors, or other equipment.
  • Sort cargo before loading and unloading.
  • Receive finished goods, inspect for damage, organize and accurately record inventory using production sheets or work tickets.
  • Record numbers of units handled or moved, using daily production sheets or work tickets.
  • Install protective devices, such as bracing, padding, or strapping, to prevent shifting or damage to items being transported.
  • Maintain equipment storage areas to ensure that inventory is protected.
  • Pack containers and re-pack damaged containers.
  • Carry needed tools or supplies from storage or trucks and return them after use.
  • Pull and prepare rolled/bundled fence product and load fencing rolls onto a flatbed truck for customers’ orders and shipping.
  • Follow established safety procedures when performing tasks and/or working with equipment.
  • Perform miscellaneous yard/warehouse duties as necessary and as directed by the supervisor.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Read work instructions and set up machines as required to run different product sizes.
  • Stand or walk for the entire shift and use arms and back to perform the tasks associated with the role.
