Material Flow / Process Engineer - Logistics

Magna International•Mesa, ME

About The Position

The Engineer, Supply Planning, designs, plans, and implements optimized material flow, packaging, and equipment processes within Division Mesa. The role balances regulatory requirements, customer specifications, material management strategies, and production constraints. It performs logistics calculations for new products and model updates, defining packaging standards, material handling equipment, headcount, and facility specifications to support end-to-end material flow activities. From a supply chain engineering perspective, this position architects the end-to-end value stream and drives integration of new products through material flow engineering, custom packaging development, and material handling equipment planning. Applying Lean Management, MTM (Methods-Time Measurement), and time study practices, the engineer develops synchronized material flows to minimize risks, optimize warehouse and line-side space, reduce lead times, and support operational and strategic objectives. The role leads logistics, packaging, and equipment initiatives for the Mesa site; analyzes and optimizes logistics and material flow processes using a PFEP approach; designs and validates standard and custom packaging; specifies and selects material handling equipment; and develops technical documentation and operating standards. It also develops standardized procedures, supports logistics IT systems, applies Lean methods and MAFACT requirements, and prepares logistics, packaging, and equipment inputs and cost calculations for new business proposals. The position requires at least three years of experience in the automotive industry and at least three years in a relevant logistics or engineering discipline. A degree in a related technical field is specified, with a relevant technical diploma or comparable hands-on industry experience potentially considered. Site benefits package details will be provided during recruitment.

  • At least 3 years of experience in the automotive industry.
  • At least 3 years of experience in logistics, supply chain engineering, packaging design or planning, equipment selection, or material flow planning.
  • Strong knowledge of SCM processes, material flow planning, packaging specifications for returnable and expendable packaging, material handling equipment planning, and MTM/time study fundamentals.
  • Experience in packaging loop calculations, dunnage design, line-side presentation techniques, and material handling equipment fleet sizing.
  • Experience applying Lean manufacturing and ergonomic principles to optimize material handling and packaging processes.
  • Degree in Logistics, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field; a relevant technical diploma or comparable hands-on industry experience may be considered.
  • Strong command of MS Office tools, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced proficiency in SAP MM and WM is preferred.
  • Exposure to CAD/3D software for packaging or layout design is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and plan logistics, packaging, and equipment initiatives for the Mesa site, considering operational needs across the supply chain.
  • Coordinate cross-functional project efforts and support Division Mesa’s operational objectives.
  • Track project progress and key milestones for material flow, packaging readiness, and equipment deployment.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and optimize logistics, packaging, and material flow processes using a PFEP (Plan for Every Part) approach.
  • Design, specify, and validate standard and custom packaging concepts, including returnable containers, dunnage, expendable packaging, and rack systems.
  • Determine material handling equipment specifications, perform capacity and ROI calculations, and select equipment tailored to material flow requirements.
  • Develop technical documentation, packaging specifications, equipment operating standards, and work instructions for material handling operations.
  • Conduct capacity and ergonomic analyses using MTM and time study principles for material movement, packaging execution, and equipment utilization.
  • Manage logistics change requests related to packaging updates, equipment modifications, and intralogistics requirements.
  • Develop and implement standardized logistics, packaging guidelines, and equipment handling procedures across Division Mesa.
  • Align site-level packaging, equipment, and logistics standards with central logistics guidelines and customer packaging manuals.
  • Collaborate in optimizing and implementing logistics IT systems, such as SAP WM/MM, packaging management systems, and fleet management systems.
  • Apply Lean Management methodologies and adhere to MAFACT requirements.
  • Create logistics, packaging, and equipment premise inputs for new business proposals (RFQs).
  • Calculate logistics costs, including freight, packaging container loops, fleet investments, and line-side equipment.
  • Evaluate logistics concepts, including floor space requirements, container fleet sizing, fleet and equipment CAPEX, workforce requirements, and required investments.

Benefits

  • Site benefits package details will be provided as part of the recruitment process.
