About The Position

This position ensures the safe, legal handling, packaging, and transportation of hazardous materials in compliance with established regulations (IATA, DOT, IMDG), audits cargo/shipments, prepares shipping documentation, labels packages, provides safety training, and manages incident responses. The role involves using Material Handling Equipment (MHE) for daily duties, including loading and unloading materials. It also requires inputting data into government and company databases, preparing reports, and acting as the Warehouse Supervisor during absences. Travel to other sites may be required, potentially resulting in irregular hours. The position also involves deciding the best approach for claims for damaged hazardous materials and resolving disputes.

Requirements

  • Must be IATA/IMDG/DOT certified and maintain certification
  • In-depth knowledge of freight forwarding and dangerous goods/hazardous shipping regulations
  • At least 2 years of experience working with Hazardous Materials/Dangerous Goods
  • High school diploma or GED required. May substitute experience for education at the rate of one year of general experience for one year of high school.
  • Must be able to obtain license to use MHE within 30 days of selection.
  • Position may require travel.
  • Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
  • US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures and audits all shipments comply with DOT, IATA, and IMDG regulations
  • Prepares and correctly classifies, labels, marks, and packs hazardous materials for domestic transportation and export shipping
  • Prepares all shipping documents, to include dangerous goods declarations, DD 1149s, and air waybills and verifies accuracy
  • Reviews and signs hazardous material shipping papers, such as declarations and bills of lading
  • Assists with safety training to personnel and maintains safe warehouse storage and hazardous materials segregation
  • Initiates claims and investigates safety incidents and damages for material being shipped to and from other sites
  • Manages shipments with carriers and warehouse staff, and coordinates packing/labeling
  • Maintains a log of shipment tracking and resolves problems with cargo/shipments
  • Uses Material Handling Equipment (MHE) for daily duties that includes loading material on and off of skids, pallets, stands and vehicles
  • Receives and inputs data and information into the Government and company databases and prepares and maintains reports
  • Acts as the Warehouse Supervisor during absences; provides instructions and issues decisions for hazardous materials storage, receipt, and transfer, and personnel assignments
  • Travels to other sites, such as Kinston Global TransPark (GTP), and assists with best practices for shipping and handling hazardous materials transport, which can result in irregular hours and working outside of normal working schedules
  • Decides best approach for claims for hazardous material damaged during transport and resolves disputes of improperly shipped material
  • Determines and selects most appropriate mode of shipping (air, ocean, ground, etc)
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Completing all training requirements and fulfilling all self-aid/buddy aid responsibilities, participating in emergency response tasks, and serving on safety committees and teams.
  • Conform to the Amentum Quality Policy and carry out job activities in compliance with applicable Amentum Quality System documents and customer contracts.
