About The Position

The Mate is responsible for understanding and carrying out the orders and directions of the captain, and must be prepared to assume command in the event of the captain's incapacity. Key duties include safely making and breaking tow with barges, handling lines and wires, and maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of the vessel. This role oversees the safety of the vessel and its equipment, maintains chart and publication corrections, and instructs deckhands in seamanship skills. The Mate also assists the captain in barge landings, determines the need for and assigns lookouts, and manages vessel cleanliness and inventory.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid USCG license with radar observer endorsement (Minimum 200 Ton Mate of Towing)
  • Previous experience as a mate or master of a tug hauling oil barges, or have completed Company Training for the position.
  • Must have Coast Guard approved firefighting training.
  • Must be able to communicate in English and effectively direct workers in assigning jobs and seeing them through to completion.
  • Must be able to train assigned workers.
  • Must be able to fairly evaluate subordinates.
  • Must be able to understand and use information in cargo information cards and material safety data sheets.
  • Must be able to read, speak, and understand English over telephone and/or radio.
  • Must be able to instruct deckhand on use of all tools and machinery onboard vessel.
  • Must have valid CPR/First Aid/AED Training and Certificate
  • Must have valid HAZWOPER 24 Hour training and current certificate.
  • Valid state driver’s license.

  • Ability to get along with crew members in confined quarters for prolonged periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees safety of vessel including all installed equipment and inspections thereof.
  • Maintains chart and publication corrections.
  • Instructs deckhands in seamanship skills.
  • Assists captain in barge landings and must be able to communicate distances and directions to captain accurately and concisely.
  • Determine the need for and assign lookouts as necessary.
  • Inspecting for cleanliness of vessel.
  • Inventory supplies and order as appropriate.
  • Monitor onboard usage to ensure supplies are utilized in an efficient manner.
