About The Position

The Mate is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel and its tow. This includes safe navigation and piloting, ensuring the seaworthiness of the vessel and its tows, the safety of the crew and passengers, environmental protection, and protection of the charterer's property. The role also involves bridge administration, paperwork, crew supervision, and on-the-job training. The Mate will manage vessel operations as directed by the Master/Relief Master, focusing on service delivery, bridge management, human resource management, and cost management in line with company policies. They will also set and stand bridge and helm watches, direct and supervise the deck crew, and maintain professional relationships with charterers.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, render, understand, and react to commands given in English.
  • Valid driver’s license and TWIC card.
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner’s document.
  • STCW training and certification booklet, as required by law.
  • Proper license by the U.S.C.G. for the type, tonnage, route, and service of the vessel.
  • FCC Marine Radio Operators Permit.

  • Ability to read and write in Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Safe piloting, navigation, and maintenance of the vessel in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Operational management of the vessel as directed by the Master/Relief Master.
  • Set and stand bridge and helm watches in rotation with other deck officers.
  • Direct and supervise the deck crew in the execution of their duties.
  • Maintain courteous and professional relationships with Company charterers and charterer representatives.
  • Complete appropriate bridge management and human resource administrative tasks.
