About The Position

Maryland Environmental Service has an opening for a Master Plumber to join the Technical and Environmental Services Group. This position responsibilities include performing, directing, and supervising advanced plumbing installation, fabrication, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of potable water, wastewater, stormwater, process piping, and related mechanical systems at BWI and Martin State Airports as well as other MES operated facilities throughout the state. The Master Plumber will serve as the technical authority for plumbing systems and regulated plumbing work, ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local plumbing codes, environmental requirements, safety standards, specifications, and MES policies. Duties include complex diagnostics and repairs involving piping systems, pumps, valves, meters, fixtures, backflow prevention assemblies, cross-connection controls, gas piping where applicable, and process equipment. This position will also provide leadership in preventive maintenance planning, emergency response, staff training, and oversight of journey-level plumbers, apprentices, contractors, and maintenance personnel working toward plumbing licensure. The position may require coordination of plumbing inspections, permits, utility mark-outs, shutdowns, code-related documentation, material procurement, work planning, and communication with operators, supervisors, project managers, engineers, and other professionals. This field office is a designated 24/7 emergency essential facility. Therefore, the ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and during adverse weather conditions will be required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a GED equivalency certificate, plus twelve years of experience performing installation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of plumbing systems.
  • Experience must include work with commercial, industrial, institutional, utility, water, wastewater, stormwater, or process piping systems.
  • Five years of the required experience must include lead worker, project oversight, directing, or supervisory responsibilities, either directly or indirectly.
  • Current Maryland Master Plumber/Gas Fitter License issued by the Maryland State Board of Plumbing (required at the time of appointment).
  • Current Backflow Prevention Certification, or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to perform confined space entry.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to obtain a Homeland Security Clearance.
  • Valid driver’s license with less than 5 points.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

  • Additional local plumbing licenses, reciprocal credentials, or registrations may be required based on assignment.
