About The Position

Johnson and Wales University's Counseling Programs, which include the M.S. in Addiction Counseling and M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in Providence, RI, are seeking to hire a new faculty member. The role involves teaching graduate-level counseling courses across the eight CACREP core areas, supporting the program, and contributing to curriculum development. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in teaching, service to the profession, and an active research and scholarship profile, defined broadly to include community-based research, various methodologies, and grant writing. A commitment to quality teaching, scholarship, service, student engagement, collaboration, and alignment with the counseling profession is essential.

Requirements

  • Earned doctorate in counselor education or a related field of study from a regionally accredited institution, or other appropriate accreditation as determined by Johnson & Wales University, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program.
  • Counseling license in Rhode Island or ability to obtain such licensure upon hire.
  • Demonstrated direct clinical counseling experience in addiction and clinical mental health counseling.
  • Experience teaching at the university level, with preference for graduate level teaching in Counselor Education or related disciplines.
  • Ability to represent the M.S. in Addiction Counseling and M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs at internal university meetings and at professional and other community organizations and events as assigned.

  • Memberships in professional counseling organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides students with a rich, relevant, and engaging academic experience.
  • Teaches, assesses student outcomes, develops curriculum, advises students, and performs university service.
  • Engages in continuous professional development and maintains current expertise in the applicable content area.
  • Develops students through effective and innovative teaching and learning practices.
  • Teaches graduate-level counseling courses in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Addiction Counseling across the eight CACREP core areas.
  • Provides support to the program.
  • Teaches theoretical, clinical, and practice-oriented classes in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Addiction Counseling programs.
  • Demonstrates specialized knowledge and maintains expertise in the theory, skills, and pedagogy of the applicable discipline or profession.
  • Uses strategies and skills necessary to support student learning and prepares and delivers current and relevant course material in an understandable and motivating manner.
  • Continually assesses course objectives and instructional methods to improve teaching and learning.
  • Uses formative and summative assessments of student learning within assigned courses to inform instruction and improve student attainment of course objectives and program outcomes.
  • Establishes a student and advisor relationship that provides guidance with regard to program choices and career possibilities and supports student educational growth through guided decision making.
  • Supports the university's outcomes initiatives by working to refine and revise course assignments and evaluation tools and leading or participating in data analysis discussions to make program and course improvements.
  • Facilitates development and revision of programs and courses, assuring alignment within the program description and outcomes, course objectives and content, as well as university curriculum standards.
  • Attends commencement, convocation, faculty meetings, department meetings, committee meetings, professional development programs, and other university events, as applicable.
  • Supports student enrollment and retention by participating in university events, advising student clubs and organizations, and assisting with admissions activities.
  • Adheres to and fulfills the responsibilities of all faculty members as outlined in the faculty manual.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
