About The Position

Under general supervision, this position provides operational and technical support to the mobile crane support group at assigned sites. The role assists site and department leadership with training, planning, safety, compliance, and workforce development related to mobile crane operations.

Requirements

  • Journeyman Maintenance Technician/Mobile Crane Operator- Completion of an Apprenticeship Program, or a two (2) year associate’s degree from an accredited college in the mechanical field or equivalent as determined by Freeport-McMoRan Management, and four (4) years of experience in a related Industrial Maintenance/Construction mechanical Mobile Crane Operator field.
  • Minimum of four years of journeyman/mobile crane operator experience or equivalent work experience with large mobile cranes (150 tons and greater capacity).
  • Selected candidate shall pass the written exam (Certified Crane Operator certification) based on safety and technical knowledge to include hydraulics, alignments, bearings, etc.
  • Selected candidate shall pass the Panel Interview.
  • Selected candidate shall pass the Hands-on test (also Certified Crane Operator Practical exam) demonstrating practical skills to include diagnostics.
  • Completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required aptitude.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills while also passing a written assessment where required.
  • Passed the Certified Crane Operator Practical exam.
  • Completed DDI and TEAMS training or equivalent.
  • Must have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Extensive experience in rigging procedures, cable reeling and crane load testing.
  • Extensive experience with mobile crane Preventative Maintenance practices and Inspection procedures.
  • Knowledge of cable reeling and crane load testing.
  • Knowledge of mobile crane Preventative Maintenance practices and Inspection procedures.
  • Knowledge of rigging procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Hydraulic equipment.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft applications and advanced computer skills.
  • Skill in working under minimal direction and perform overtime as required.
  • Ability to pass an annual physical (to include color recognition and depth perception).
  • Ability to read, understand and apply information from technical manuals, Blueprints and schematics for trouble shooting and repair in English.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts and both scheduled and unscheduled overtime at a 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year operation.
  • Possess a good safety and attendance record.
  • Ability to show up to work as required and on time.
  • Must be eligible for transfer/promotion as per the Guiding Principles (internal candidates).
  • Candidates may be required to pass a medical exam.
  • Candidates must pass all required training and/or testing.
  • Employees may be required to work a non-standard schedule, which may include shift work (other than day shift) at a 24/7, 365-day operation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development, training, and ongoing skill enhancement of employees performing mobile crane operations.
  • Support the planning and preparation of scheduled crane jobs to ensure safe and efficient execution.
  • Actively participate in and support company safety programs, including behavioral safety audits, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Near Miss reporting, Metals programs, and other initiatives as directed by management.
  • Assist management in ensuring compliance with company policies, procedures, and environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of cost control principles and assist in the development of departmental operating, maintenance, and capital budgets.
  • Participate in the mentoring and onboarding process for new Mobile Crane Operators and Apprentices.
  • Serve as a member of the selection panel for Certified and Master Mobile Crane Operators.
  • Perform other duties as required.
