About The Position
This position performs major overhauls of gasoline and/or diesel engines, and leads repairs on the most difficult and complex agency-identified equipment problems. The role involves diagnosing, troubleshooting, replacing, and repairing electronic and hydraulic systems, as well as performing general repairs and maintenance on vehicles and equipment. The Master Mechanic also provides on-the-job training to lower-level mechanics and trainees, and works with training administrators to develop and improve training programs. Responsibilities include operating welding equipment, maintaining repair records, managing parts inventory, and ensuring the cleanliness of the work area and tools. The State of Ohio is a drug-free workplace, and this position may be subject to additional restrictions regarding drug use, including marijuana. A valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is required.
Requirements
- 48 months of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and/or agency-identified equipment.
- Valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of a type and size regulated by sections 4506.01 and 4506.12 of Ohio revised code.
- Valid Class A CDL without air brake restriction, with tanker endorsement must be obtained during probationary period and maintained thereafter.
- Must register as a driver in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Responsibilities
- Performs major overhauls of gasoline and/or diesel engines.
- Repairs, rebuilds, and/or replaces minor and major parts of vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnoses, troubleshoots, replaces, and/or repairs electronic systems, including engine control modules and anti-lock brake systems.
- Identifies, troubleshoots, repairs, and calibrates hydraulic system control units.
- Provides on-the-job training to lower-level ODOT mechanics and mechanic trainees.
- Works with agency training administrators on program and content delivery.
- Repairs systems using up-to-date diagnostic equipment and re-flashes control modules.
- Evaluates and makes recommendations on mechanic-related software.
- Adjusts valves and performs preventive maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment.
- Performs miscellaneous mechanic work, including body repair and tire replacement.
- Provides service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis.
- Schedules maintenance and/or repairs of equipment.
- Maintains repair or service records.
- Attends training schools and updates shop manuals and parts books.
- Operates welding equipment to heat, shape, and weld machinery and equipment.
- Operates computer systems to enter, edit, and retrieve data.
- Performs inventories of machinery and heavy equipment and orders/picks up parts and supplies.
- Cleans garage area, equipment, and tools.
- Mows grass.
- Operates equipment, snowplows, and/or tow trucks.
