The Master Compressor Mechanic is responsible for the advanced maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of industrial compressor systems, chillers, and utility equipment within a high-performance industrial environment. This role serves as a subject matter expert in rotating equipment and utility systems, ensuring maximum reliability, efficiency, and uptime of critical assets.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience operating and maintaining industrial compressor systems (including oil-free air compressors and related utilities)
  • Strong troubleshooting experience with rotating equipment and thermodynamic systems
  • Proven experience with industrial chillers and plant utility systems
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and system documentation
  • Experience with vibration analysis, alignment, and predictive maintenance techniques
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Proof of education, licenses, and certifications will be required where applicable

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced maintenance, diagnostics, and overhaul of: Industrial chillers and chilled water systems, Centrifugal, screw, oil-free, and reciprocating compressors, Cooling towers, pumps, and heat exchangers, Condensers, evaporators, and refrigerant systems, Oil management and water treatment systems, VFDs and utility distribution piping networks
  • Execute preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities to ensure system reliability and performance.
  • Diagnose compressor and system performance issues using: Pressure and temperature relationships, Compression ratios and motor loading, Oil analysis and vibration data, Trend analysis and system performance metrics
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment faults including: Surge conditions and low capacity events, High discharge temperatures, Oil carryover and contamination, Bearing and seal failures, Excessive vibration and cooling inefficiencies
  • Perform precision alignment of rotating equipment using laser alignment tools.
  • Conduct vibration monitoring and mechanical condition assessments to identify early-stage equipment degradation.
  • Support compressor startup, shutdown, preservation, and recommissioning activities.
  • Verify operation and functionality of system components including: Inlet guide vanes and capacity controls, Blow-off valves and oil pumps, Intercoolers, aftercoolers, and condensate systems
  • Interpret and utilize technical documentation such as: P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and single-line diagrams, OEM manuals, control sequences, and equipment curves
  • Perform refrigerant handling tasks including charging, leak detection, recovery, and evacuation.
  • Execute condenser cleaning programs, tube inspections, and coordinate eddy current testing.
  • Monitor and optimize system performance: Chilled water ΔT and flow rates, Compressor loading and energy efficiency, Utility consumption and system availability
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring failures and implement reliability improvements.
  • Provide technical leadership during critical equipment failures, outages, and production-impact events.
  • Coordinate with OEMs, vendors, and contractors for major maintenance and repair activities.
  • Maintain accurate CMMS records including maintenance history, labor hours, and reliability data.
  • Mentor and train junior mechanics and technicians.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures including lockout/tagout, confined space, and pressure safety requirements.
  • Support shutdown planning, outage execution, and long-term maintenance strategies.
  • Assist engineering teams with system optimization and energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Any other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned to you in your role.
