About The Position

A Marketing/Communications Specialist II is a journey-level, professional classification responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing a marketing, public relations, and/or education program for an assigned division or subdivision. This role serves as an information resource to citizens, contractors, architects, developers, business owners, news media, and community groups regarding an assigned area. Duties may include handling electronic and print media, press releases, advertising, marketing City programs and services, writing articles, and graphic design. If public relations is the primary function, duties involve planning, developing, and implementing information programs and materials for employees, citizens, and the general public. If education is the primary function, duties include educating the public about program area issues, developing public education programs and materials, and attending community events. The role may also be responsible for maintaining the division website, including developing and producing web content, writing and designing web pages, and ensuring content meets City specifications. The position requires a high degree of discretion and courtesy in public interactions, which may sometimes involve confrontational meetings. Lead responsibilities for a project or team may be assigned, and supervision of clerical or paraprofessional classes is possible. This class performs related duties as required and is distinguished from the Marketing/Communications Specialist I by its greater complexity, scope, latitude, and minimal supervision requirements. A significant element of work involves specialized public contact requiring patience, tact, and persuasion. This class is FLSA exempt-administrative.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or closely related field.
  • Considerable (3 - 5 years) full-time experience involving marketing, public relations, communications, or a related field.
  • Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License by hire or promotion date.

  • Successful completion of written and verbal bilingual (English/Spanish) testing prior to hire (for Hispanic Outreach Assignment).

Responsibilities

  • Developing, coordinating, and implementing a marketing, public relations, and/or education program for an assigned division or subdivision.
  • Serving as an information resource to citizens, contractors, architects, developers, business owners, news media, and community groups.
  • Handling electronic and print media activities, press releases, and advertising.
  • Meeting with interested parties to market or sell City programs and services.
  • Writing articles for publication.
  • Performing graphic design work.
  • Planning, developing, and implementing a variety of information for programs or materials to facilitate communication to employees, citizens, and the general public.
  • Effectively educating a diverse public about program area issues in a positive manner.
  • Developing public education programs and materials for a variety of audiences.
  • Attending neighborhood meetings, community events, school groups, church groups, club meetings, etc.
  • Maintaining the division website, including developing and producing content using web technology.
  • Writing and designing pages for the website to keep it up-to-date, interesting, and interactive.
  • Maintaining website content to City specifications and design standards.
  • Exercising a high degree of discretion and courtesy in dealing with the public.
  • Handling potentially stressful public contact, including confrontational meetings.
  • Potentially having lead responsibilities for a project or team.
  • Potentially supervising clerical or paraprofessional classes.
  • Performing any combination of marketing, public relations, or education duties as assigned.
  • Performing related duties as required.
