Market Design Analyst

AESOCalgary, AB

About The Position

Alberta's wholesale electricity market restructuring is one of the most significant changes to the electricity market in a generation. The Restructured Energy Market (REM) has been designed and the work of bringing it to life is just beginning. The AESO's Market Design team is looking for a Market Design Analyst to help lead that effort. This is where policy becomes reality: taking the market design and working through the technical details that implementation requires. That means specifying how core market mechanisms will need to function, like how dispatch logic translates into settlement processes. It means working as part of a team to move the REM design forward, in alignment with the organization and with industry. The decisions made in this role will be embedded in how Alberta's electricity market operates for the future. You will wield your expertise in economics, business, or engineering to shape the development of Alberta's electricity market. If you're drawn to technically demanding work and you want to be part of something that doesn't come around often in this industry, here is your opportunity.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of Alberta's electricity market: You understand how Alberta's wholesale market is structured and you can apply that knowledge independently to problems you haven't seen before. Familiarity with the REM and the changes it introduces is a strong advantage.
  • 5+ years of experience in electricity markets: Gained through work at a system operator, market participant, regulator, or advisory firm.
  • Proven ability to drive alignment across teams: You've worked across organizational boundaries and you know how to build trust and shared understanding that helps make informed decisions.
  • Sound judgment on complex technical and policy questions: You can assess tradeoffs, weigh competing considerations, and reach well-reasoned positions without needing extensive direction.
  • Clear, confident communication: You write well and speak with authority on technical subjects. You can explain a complex market design question to a non-technical audience, and you can dive into detailed technical discussions with subject matter experts.
  • Degree in economics, engineering, or a related field

Nice To Haves

  • A graduate degree is an asset, particularly if it led to a deeper understanding of energy economics, market design, or regulatory policy.
  • Quantitative or modelling experience is an asset but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the technical details to implement REM: Translate the REM components into practice. For components that may require further refinement, lead or contribute to that process with the same rigour applied to the broader framework.
  • Coordinate across a wide range of internal teams: Work closely with engineering, operations, IT, legal, finance, and communications to make sure implementation can meet operational needs and surface any misalignment early. You will translate between teams that don't always speak the same language to keep the work moving.
  • Engage with external stakeholders when required: Build and maintain strong working relationships as implementation details are developed and confirmed. Represent the AESO's positions clearly and field technical questions with credibility.
  • Communicate complex decisions clearly: Produce memos, decision documents, and presentations that explain technical market issues in plain language for internal teams, senior leadership, and external audiences.

Benefits

  • competitive salary
