Position: Market Access Private Insurance Senior Manager Reporting to: Director, Value & Access What you will do Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will sit within the Value, Access & Policy department and operates at the intersection of pricing, reimbursement, and stakeholder engagement, aligning internal teams with external payer needs to drive both access and business outcomes. The role is accountable for ensuring Amgen’s innovative and biosimilar therapies achieve timely coverage and reimbursement by private insurers in Canada. This position focuses on shaping and executing payer strategies, leading negotiations, and leveraging established relationships with private insurance stakeholders to secure optimal patient access. It requires strong executive presence and credibility when engaging with private payers, representing the organization effectively in high-impact external interactions. The role demands deep expertise in private market dynamics, including payers, PBMs, brokers, and policy influencers, to enable successful product listings, defend existing access, and support pipeline launches. It is also critical in providing internal teams with strategic insights and serving as the subject matter expert on the evolving payer landscape to inform decision-making and sustain competitive positioning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, business, health economics, or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of demonstrated experience working with or for private insurers and/or payer organizations

  • Demonstrated experience of working with or for a pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical manufacturer, with a focus on market access, reimbursement, or private payer strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver Results Lead the development and execution of the Private Insurance strategic plan across the portfolio, including innovator and biosimilar products
  • Define and execute tailored payer strategies for key private insurance customers to optimize formulary positioning and maximize patient access across the Amgen portfolio
  • Own and deliver against private payer access objectives, including coverage, patient access, and financial performance
  • Generate and leverage data-driven insights to identify opportunities, shape strategy, and inform business decisions
  • Identify access barriers and implement solutions (e.g., coverage policy optimization, prior authorization support) to enhance patient access
  • Lead private payer strategy for new product launches and indications, ensuring timely, competitive, and sustainable coverage
  • Evolve payer strategies across the product lifecycle in response to market dynamics, competitive pressures, and policy changes
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Relationship Management Strengthen and expand strategic relationships with key private insurance stakeholders, including insurers, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), brokers, plan sponsors, and other payer decision-makers
  • Represent the organization in external forums, industry associations, and working groups, demonstrating strong executive presence and reinforcing organizational credibility
  • Lead complex negotiations and strategic engagements with private payers to secure and sustain optimal access outcomes
  • Shape and influence payer perception of value and reimbursement decisions through targeted, high-impact engagements
  • Cross-Functional Leadership Partner with internal teams including VA&P (Health Economics Manager, Contracts & Pricing Manager, Government Relations Manager), Medical Team, Commercial Team, Patient Support Team, Legal Act as the subject matter expert on private payer dynamics, influencing brand and portfolio strategy, ensuring alignment between access strategy and brand objectives Partners with Patient Support Programs to optimize the end-to-end patient access experience
  • Communicate complex payer insights clearly to diverse audiences, including senior leadership, and influence cross-functional alignment
  • Pricing & Reimbursement Optimization Collaborate with Pricing to align on product pricing strategies that support reimbursement
  • Work with Pricing to develop compelling business cases that assess trade-offs between access, pricing, and profitability to inform decision-making
  • Optimize reimbursement pathways to ensure rapid, broad, and sustainable access
  • Support development of reimbursement strategies for both in-market and pipeline products
  • Provide input into listing agreements, reimbursement terms, contract strategies and financial modeling
  • Monitor and evaluate the financial impact of payer agreements
  • Contracting & Agreement Management Lead negotiation of private payer agreements and product listings, while balancing speed and value
  • Support team to ensure contracts are compliant and aligned with corporate and legal requirements
  • Track performance against contractual terms and KPIs
  • Collaborate on the design, negotiation, and implementation of innovative contracting solutions
  • Support lifecycle management of agreements, ensuring performance tracking and optimization
  • Identify opportunities for novel reimbursement models and strategic collaborations
  • Market Intelligence & Insights Monitor competitor access strategies and payer coverage decisions, to inform Private Insurance Strategic Plan
  • Gather and synthesize insights from payer interactions to inform strategy and Commercial teams
  • Provide regular updates to senior leadership on access risks and opportunities
  • Leverage analytics to guide forecasting and planning for current and pipeline products
  • Identify emerging risks and opportunities within the private insurance ecosystem
  • Evidence & Value Proposition Development Support development of value dossiers and payer-facing materials
  • Translate clinical and pharmacoeconomic data into compelling payer value propositions
  • Influence on how payers assess value, including outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and workforce impact
  • Compliance & Governance Ensure all interactions with payers align with legal, regulatory, and compliance standards
  • Maintain documentation and transparency in payer engagements
