Our Marine Systems Team in Rhode Island is looking for an experienced and highly skilled Vessel Operator to pilot small, jet-drive surface vessels in support of Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E). You will work closely with marine engineers, technicians, and vehicle operators to deploy, track, and recover UUVs in various sea states and shallow water environments. This is a full-time temporary position with the ability to convert to permanent employment.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience operating small to mid-sized jet-drive vessels (e.g., Hamilton or Doen drives) in dynamic marine environments.
  • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) - Master 50/100 Ton or OUPV preferred.
  • Basic mechanical proficiency and hands-on experience maintaining marine engines and propulsion systems.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy UUV programs, unmanned systems, and in-water testing procedures is highly desired.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, excellent team coordination, and the ability to adapt to fast-paced field testing schedules.
  • Must be US Citizen.
  • This position may require the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance.
  • Must be able to work extended hours on the water, potentially in adverse weather and sea conditions.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and lift/carry heavy gear up to 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to travel to remote test sites or spend consecutive days at sea aboard host vessels as mission requirements dictate.
  • Ability to work in the office at the Wakefield, RI facility with a flexible 9/80 schedule.

  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy UUV programs, unmanned systems, and in-water testing procedures is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate and navigate small, jet-drive vessels for nearshore UUV testing.
  • Adjust speed, heading, and positioning to account for shifting winds, currents, tides, and underwater topography.
  • Assist the engineering team with the safe launching, towing, and recovery of UUVs.
  • Maintain a precise, stationary hover or slow-speed maneuverability to avoid damage to autonomous vehicles.
  • Perform pre-departure and post-voyage inspections.
  • Execute operator-level troubleshooting and preventative maintenance on vessel, engines, and waterjet propulsion systems.
  • Maintain continuous situational awareness.
  • Monitor onboard navigation and communication systems (RADAR, GPS, VHF).
  • Ensure all operations strictly adhere to HSE and Coast Guard regulations.
  • Log mission parameters, vessel performance data, and environmental observations into daily test reports.
