About The Position

Performs as marine communications coordinator for a marine unit transporting crew members, public vehicles and passengers. Work requires frequent contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicants work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Marine Communication Coordinator I - 1 year experience in marine operations, including radio communications. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
  • Marine Communication Coordinator II - 3 Years in Marine operations, including radio communications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • For Galveston Ferry Operations: Must have or obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within ninety (90) days of the date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Answers public inquiries to include schedule information and coordinates emergency response
  • Assists in coordinating administrative and maintenance requirements for operational ferries
  • Assists in coordinating and facilitating the staging and/or movement of arrival and depart
  • Coordinates priority boarding for emergencies and other authorized vehicles.
  • Coordinates the after-hours pickup and delivery of repair parts, supplies and equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assists in coordination of traffic control with local law enforcement during summer months.
  • Assists in overseeing and coordinating priority boarding for emergencies and other authorized vehicles.
  • Assists in overseeing and coordinating the physical security inspection and report of unit complex and all moored ferry vessels.
  • Assists in overseeing and monitoring personnel arrivals and departures.
  • Assists in overseeing set up, operation and monitoring of land lines and designated frequencies of installed and portable radio telephone equipment and adjusts or reprograms as required.
  • Assists in overseeing the operation and maintenance of continuous land line communications with the general public and VHF-FM marine communications with operational ferries.
  • Assists in overseeing the staging and/or movement of arrival and departure of vehicles and passengers through the ferry system.
  • Coordinates administrative and maintenance requirements for operational ferries.
  • Answers public inquiries to include schedule information and coordinates emergency responses with various local, county, state and federal agencies.
  • Coordinates the after-hours pickup and delivery of repair parts, supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures the proper routing of all after-hours messages, records, reports and/or documents.
  • Maintains and submits daily logs of vessel movements, watch activities, personnel matters and unusual occurrences or special events.
  • Notifies appropriate support personnel and/or supervisors of problems and other pertinent information affecting the operational capability of ferry vessels and all matters of consequence with the public.
  • Operates master control panel for traffic light signals, changeable signs and barricades at ferry approaches and vehicle staging areas.
  • Performs the duties of ferryboat deckhand.
  • Recalls relief and/or repair personnel as required or directed.
  • Sets up and operates ship-to-shore radio telephone patch equipment.
  • Transmits and receives routine and emergency operational and administrative informal voice message traffic.
